I stood on the edge of the abandoned transit station, fingers flexing inside my gloves, shadows pooling lazily at my feet like they were half-asleep. The city above us roared with life—cars, voices, neon—but down here everything felt muted, heavy. Old rails rusted into the concrete. Broken lights flickered like nervous tells. This was my first real operation with them. No simulations. No controlled illusions. Just us, the city, and whatever waited in the dark. “We go in quiet,” the silver-haired man said. “In and out. We confirm the signal source, then leave.” The signal. That’s what drew us here—an energy spike too familiar to ignore. Something close to mine. Too close. My chest tightened.
