Chapter 3

Lily's parents came because I had specially asked the admin department to invite them. The reason sounded perfectly reasonable. Lily had been with the company for six months, had worked hard, and had come to help today. I wanted to thank her in front of our families. When her parents heard they could attend an event at such an upscale hotel, they were delighted. The moment Lily's mother entered, she grabbed Lily and said, quietly but with obvious pride, "Your boss is really rich. A table here must cost a fortune, right?" Lily's father also looked around. "Lily, you had better work hard for Ms. Pierce. Even a little of what she gives you would be enough for our family to live on for years." Lily's face turned pale. Before the party began, I left two comments on Lily's private alt account. H: [Once he gets engaged, it will be too late to change anything, and he will never want you again.] H: [If he really sees you as his girlfriend, why is he still making you sit in the audience today?] Sure enough, the moment Lily read them, the look in her eyes changed. Right after that, Ethan's phone lit up. He glanced at it and frowned as he walked out. I stood behind him and asked, "Where are you going?" His body stiffened. "A company call." I reminded him, "The ceremony is about to start." He lowered his voice impatiently. "I know. I'm just taking a call. Can you stop being so tense?" Then he walked away quickly. Less than 30 seconds later, Lily also slipped out through the side door. I watched them leave one after the other, and instead of feeling anxious, I felt relieved. I turned my phone over in my palm and waited quietly. There was a private lounge on the hotel's third floor. It was my dressing room for the day. Inside was a tablet connected to the main screen in the ballroom. The camera faced the door and the sofa. Originally, the wedding planning company was supposed to use it to play the video montage of my relationship with Ethan. Now, it was exactly what I needed. Five minutes before the ceremony began, the emcee was already on stage. Music started. The lights dimmed. Every guest in the room was waiting for the couple to enter. But Ethan was gone, and so was Lily. The wedding coordinator broke into a sweat. He covered his earpiece and kept asking, "Where is Ethan's father? Is Ethan's father still not in position?" The smile on Ethan's mother's face froze. Ethan's father frowned as well. In front of everyone, I called Ethan. It went unanswered. Whispers gradually spread through the room. I lowered my eyes. Ethan's parents looked deeply embarrassed. Ethan's mother forced a smile and tried to comfort me. "Hannah, don't worry. Ethan may be dealing with something. He will come over once he's done." Ethan's father pretended to be angry. "Just wait until I teach that brat a lesson. He has no sense of time at all." On the other side, Lily's parents were muttering in confusion too. "How strange. Where did Lily run off to? She was here just now." "Forget about her. We need to praise Ms. Pierce later. Maybe we can get a generous bonus." I glanced at them and said nothing. The emcee walked over to me with a stiff smile. "Ms. Pierce, if we keep delaying, the opening music will end." I looked at Ethan's parents and forced a helpless expression. "Then play the video first." The big screen suddenly went black. Everyone assumed they were about to watch our relationship montage. But when the screen lit up, the image showed the private lounge on the third floor. Lily clung to Ethan, red-eyed, her face buried against his chest. She sobbed, "Are you really getting engaged to her today? I already gave myself to you. What am I supposed to do now?"
