"That was quite impressive, your math skills Mr. Tilly." I sighed as I followed him into the almost bare office. "Sit." He waved at the wooden chair across from a semi better-looking one. I sat down the same time as him and looked around, noting differences to my father's old office. I smiled sadly at the thought before looking at him. He was staring at me intensely. "You'll get your check at the end of the month. You will be my secretary and do anything I ask of you, within reason of course."
I nodded before attempting to get up. "I am not finished." I sit back down on the very uncomfortable wood and raise an eyebrow. "If anyone finds out a female is working for this company I will be finished. You need to keep that under strict consideration." I nodded and he jerked his head towards the other door beside his desk.
I got up and walked through it find a similar-looking room but in smaller size. "You can decorate how you want but understand, this is your office temporarily." I nodded before turning around to see him very close. "You can start by organizing and filing all the documents in the drawers from the last secretary." He turned and sat back down at his desk. I saw a tube of things in his floor.
"Is that a device for giving orders to your workers?" He gave a stiff nod. "My father used to have one so I know how to use them." I shut my door and sat at the oak desk. It was simple and sleek. All of the necessary tools for writing and typing up documents were there with some extra items that made it easier to work. I look at the piles of boxes sitting across the room and smiled, memories of playing with random papers of my father's.
"Well. Time to work." I grabbed two of the boxes and set them next to the desk before going through them.
"Mr. Tilly. You are dismissed." When I looked up the from the papers in front of me I noticed that the light from the outside was now gone. "Oh, I didn't realize how fast the time had gone by. I will be leaving then. See you tomorrow Mr. Cranston." I stood up, organizing the pile in front of me. "I will have Jesus bring a carriage to take you home." I raised an eyebrow. "I will simply walk home Mr. Cranston. I will be quite alright."
He simply shook his head. "I can not allow a woman-" I smiled. "Yet I look like a man so I will fine. See you tomorrow Mr. Cranston." I walked out the door giggling. I knew he was unable to do anything as letting me walk home would go against his morals but I am dressed like a male so it would be considered weird.
As I walked out I began to notice that hardly anyone was there. The staff the milled about on the different floors and the different rooms were gone. I finally looked at the clock on the first floor to see it was late. Really late. "You still wish to walk home?" I jumped and turned around to see Mr. Cranston staring at me from the stairs. "Yes. I wouldn't want resources to be wasted on me. " He nodded, his jaw clenched and I smiled. "I'll see you tomorrow Mr. Cranston." I walked out of the front doors to the building to see Jesus standing there. "Goodbye." His response was a simple grunt.
Walking the streets in the late evening was quite peaceful. There were no people milling about except for occasional cleaners and people going home late like me. It was silent and for the first time in a long time, I felt free from the chains of society. Sure I had people I live with and help take care of but I wasn't under the pressure my aunt put me under to be the perfect lady. I could be me without consequences.
Well, a male me but me nonetheless. I just wished this time lasted as long as it could.
