his restraint, her undoing

Chapter Four — His Restraint, Her Undoing Mr. Donovan stood by the window long after Zara left, fists clenched, jaw locked. Snow fell outside in gentle spirals, but inside, his chest felt like a war zone. What the hell was he doing? She was Lila’s best friend. A guest in his house. Barely twenty. And yet — her scent still lingered in his room, warm and maddening, like temptation in its purest form. He hadn’t meant to open the door. But he’d heard her steps in the hallway. Soft, hesitant. And something in him… responded. He’d expected guilt to hit harder. Instead, it was frustration. Frustration at how much she saw — how easily she read him — how effortlessly she unraveled the parts of him he’d kept locked away for years. Downstairs, he heard laughter. Zara’s. It was cruel how sweet her laugh was. *** Later that evening, the fireplace was alive again, casting a golden glow across the living room. Lila was asleep on the couch, mouth open, arms sprawled. Zara sat curled on the rug, sipping tea. She didn't look up when he walked in. He hesitated, then crossed the room. “Cold?” he asked, quietly. She looked up slowly, eyes meeting his. “A little.” He bent, picked up the throw blanket draped on the armchair, and offered it. She reached for it — and their fingers brushed. Electric. He didn’t move. Neither did she. “I’m not a child,” she murmured again. “I know,” he said, too softly. They both looked at Lila. Still asleep. Still safe. Zara leaned in just a little. “Then stop treating me like one.” His jaw tightened. His voice was barely a breath. “You don’t know what you’re doing.” She smiled — a wicked, sweet, dangerous smile. “Don’t I?” He pulled away. Quick. Sharp. As if the space between them had burned him. Without another word, he left the room. But she saw it. The way his hands trembled. The way his breath caught. She was getting under his skin. And he hated it. Almost as much as he loved it.
