The next day at school, Emma found herself fidgeting in her seat as her nerves got the better of her. She knew she needed to talk to Xander about the conversation she had with Gabriel, but she wasn't sure how to broach the subject without making it sound like she was outright asking him to the dance.
Xander approached her at lunch, his usual easy grin on his face, but she couldn't help but feel her heart race just a little faster than normal. They sat together on the grass, their backs against a tree, and for a few moments, they ate in unspoken companionship.
Finally, Xander broke the silence. "You okay, Em? You've been a little off today."
Emma hesitated, biting her lip. "I, um, I told a lie to Gabriel yesterday, and I'm not sure how to fix it."
"Oh? What did you say?" Xander asked, concerned about coloring his voice.
Emma cringed inwardly. "I told him I had a date for the dance in five months. I panicked, and it just slipped out. I know it's silly, but now I feel like I'm in this weird limbo where I have to find a date or tell him the truth."
Xander chuckled lightly. "Well, knowing Gabriel, he'd probably find it hilarious that you lied to him in the first place. But as for finding a date... have you thought about who you might want to go with?"
Emma stared down at her half-eaten sandwich, her nerves returning in full force. "I... I don't know. I mean, I've thought about it, but it's just so... complicated."
Xander placed his hand on her shoulder, his touch warm and comforting. "What's complicated about it? You can ask anyone you want, Em."
"But what if I ask the wrong person?" Emma blurted out, her voice wavering. "What if asking them changes everything, and our friendship is never the same again?"
A knowing smile spread across Xander's face as he listened to her concerns. "Emma, you're overthinking this. If the person you ask is really your friend, they'll understand whether you want to go with them as a date or just as friends. And if asking someone to the dance changes your friendship for the worse, then maybe it wasn't as strong as you thought it was."
Emma felt a pang in her chest at his words. "I... I guess you're right. I just... I don't want to ruin anything, you know?"
Xander tilted his head, his dark eyes searching her face. "Are you... are you talking about us, Em? About our friendship?"
Emma felt her face heat up, and she looked away, unable to meet his gaze. "I... maybe? I don't know. It's just... I really value our friendship, Xander. And I'm scared that if I ask you to the dance, it'll change things."
A moment of silence stretched between them, and for a brief moment, Emma was afraid she had crossed a line. But then, Xander sighed, his tone gentle and understanding. "Emma, our friendship is important to me too. More than you know. But you don't have to be afraid of asking me to the dance. If that's what you want to do, then I'd be honored to go with you, as a date or just as friends. And if you decide to go with someone else or not go at all, I'll be there to support you either way. Our friendship is strong enough to handle this, Em. I truly believe that."
Emma blinked back tears, touched by his sincerity. "Thank you, Xander. It... it means a lot to me to hear you say that."
Xander's grin returned as he nudged her playfully. "No problem, Em. And hey, if we do end up going together, we'll have the best time. That's a promise."
