I tried reading his face but it gave nothing away, no emotions or expressions, just a frozen mask of indifference. I felt my hope dwindling with every second. It felt like I was trapped, sinking deeper and deeper into the swamp, until the mud covered me completely and snuffed life out of me.
He met my gaze and said coldly, “You will never know the answer if you don’t look”
His stare wavered, like my gaze made him uncomfortable, it’s hard to believe my stare did that to him.
I touched the folder, thinking this through, I hesitated for a moment, and opened the folder. The first page was alarming, my eyes widened from each sentence, the words on it made my heart beat wildly. I took my time and read it through thoroughly, I took a deep breath, and closed the document loudly. I raised my head, stared directly at the face of the man opposite, “Where did you get this information? Do you think I will believe these bunch of words that are written on it?”
Christopher’s eyes narrowed slightly, and his words were very slow and soft, disappearing like a wisp of smoke, “So you think I'd go through all this length to get this information to show you lies? So you assume I don't have better things to do than feed you lies? No one has ever dared to question my words. You are the first Miss Green”
“So what? You think I'm just supposed to believe you”, I shrugged. Christopher stood up, with a hint of cold disdain in his eyes, “If you don’t believe me, it's your loss, I’m not the one in prison. I see you like the hell you’re living in. I’ll give you two days to think about it, if you change your mind, I'll be back in two days”
After saying that, Christopher turned around neatly, put one hand in his suit trouser pocket, and stepped out of the prison door.
“I think you should consider his offer, a girl like you doesn’t fit in this kinda place, you won’t last one month”, Charles sighed and followed after him.
I looked at his leaving figure, and at that moment, her vision became a little painful.
What exactly is going on?
A lot of things have happened in just a short period of time, more bad unbelievable things keep piling up and growing. My birthday started on a very bad note.
How the f**k aren’t I my father’s biological daughter? Is it because Dad killed Uncle Anthony? Am I his daughter instead? Is that why I’m Uncle Anthony’s favourite? This just means Mom has been cheating on dad for a very long time and got pregnant for him and tagged it on dad.
I was starting to rethink a lot of things that happened when I was growing up. Why are all these things being brought to light right now?
Is that why he wanted me to take his place in jail, because he hates me and wants revenge? He really must be hurt, he has the heart to let me take the blame for him.
There are a lot of 'Why's’ I have no answer to. But one thing i know for sure is I’m not the reason for all this, I'm just a victim, I shouldn't be caught up in the middle of this.
My eyes were filled with unshed tears that it hurts, I could feel a headache coming in as I rubbed my temples with my hands.
“Is that what a father would do?” I whispered.
My cheeks hurt from crying too much but I could stop the trails of water that escaped from my eyes. Not only did I take the blame for my father and go to jail, the heavy damages I have suffered to my body and soul was too much for me to bear! Until now, I couldn’t even imagine how miserable I felt at the moment I don’t even know which one hurts more: the fact that I lost my virginity to a total stranger, my fiances thinks I cheated on him and that my face is plastered round the city, the fact that my possible real father is dead and was killed by who I thought was my dad and wants to frame me.
I’m slowly losing my f*****g mind!
“I won’t be a pawn in this!” I said through gritted teeth, my hands clenched into fists, my arms trembling slightly, and my heart felt as heavy as heartache.
Two days after, I was pacing in my cell, patiently waiting for a prison guard to call me out, for Christopher to be back as he said he would. It’s almost 6, Visiting hours were almost over, I was slowly giving up, the smallest hope I had left, the slightest chance of me getting out of this dump was long gone. I buried my head in my hands, accepting my fate when the locks on my door moved and the door swung open. The prison guard walked up to me and handcuffed me, “Someone is here to see you.” I knew it was Christopher before I even saw him. He must be very important for the authorities to bring their rule for him.
He stood tall in his crisp black suit, you raised his head up when he heard my footsteps. I gave me a quick once over and he frowned at what he saw. I’m not exactly ‘a sight for sore eyes’, I know I look worse than I did a few days earlier.
I don’t need anyone to point out that I looked haggard but I could see and feel the disgust in his eyes. I hugged myself tightly, feeling so insecure and sat down. This shows how serious the ideological struggle has been over the past two days. Physical torture is sometimes far less painful than mental torture!
His eyes went soft when he met me, like he could feel my ache and understand the pains I’m feeling. “What are you thinking about it? Miss Green”, Christopher looked me dead in the eye directly.
I was silent for a while before replying, “I need to know the whole truth, I don't want half crumbs of my situation”
Christopher looked at me and scoffed, “Sorry, I’m not from the investigation department. The story has a beginning. If you want to know the outcome of the story, you’d have to go check it out yourself. Now give me a sentence. Do you want to get out or wait for your darling father to come to your rescue which I highly doubt he would?”
It seems like he really has the final say here?
Christopher did not refuse her gaze, but continued to mock, “Are you really ready to take back your confession and watch your father pay for his crimes by going to jail himself?
“I am”, I stated.
I just want to be sure you won't break, I know you've got a soft heart and spot for him?
Or will you just continue to be someone else’s pawn?”
My eyes darkened with anger,“No! I… will never be anyone’s pawn!”
His eyes glowed as he stared at me, like he really enjoys seeing my pissed, “Then your answer is….”
“I retract my confession”, I said strongly.
What made me come to this conclusion is the fact that no one has come to visit me, not my mother or sibling, or the man I called my father for so many years, the man who should have been here, not me. No single lawyer has come for me to take my statement. They literally abandoned me here to rot in jail.
Christopher’s voice was lowered, low and deep, “Ok, I will arrange everything, just wait patiently and you’d be out soon”
He stood up and was about to leave without saying anything else when I stopped him, my fingers brushed his hands and I felt a sudden rush of heat, I removed my hands quickly.
“Who are you? Why do you wanna help me? What is your purpose?”, I know for certain this isn’t for free.
He stopped for a second, but he did not look back, “My target is not you, but… James!” he walked away leaving me shocked.
“What the f**k is happening?” I murmured to herself, as I stared at his disappearing figure. How does he know my father and What does he want with him?
This is far from over, I’m being thrown into another puzzle all over again, but at least I won't be behind bars to solve it.
Christopher hired Chicago’s best lawyer, Mr Matthew to defend me and I was able to take back my confession without any penalties. After one week of a stressful trial, I was finally released by the court and James is suspected of committing a major crime and has been included in the arrest list.
