Chapter 28: Crime and Crimes.

Cornel was about to use the telephone when it rang, making his heart beat fast. There are two reasons why. First, their officers want an update, or second, someone dies again.

“H-hello, this is xxx police division. What can we help you?” Cornel asked, but no one answered, “ Hello? Are you making fun with me?” Cornel asked again.

But now, he heard a scream; a loud scream of a man.

“No! Stop…. Stop! Don’t touch me you f*ck*ng b*st*rd!” Cornel could hear how nervous the man was even though he was shouting like a madman.

Stepping sounds echoed from the other line. From this, Cornel can tell that the people on the other line are in a place like a gym again or corridor where the sound can echo.

“Hello, where are you, hello?” Cornel tried to talk with the man in the other line.

Then the call died.

Cornel immediately walks toward where Lorente is.

“Hey dude! Wake up, someone called and I think we need to investigate it!” Gradually, Lorente opened his eyes.

“What is happening? Why did you wake me up? I only slept for minutes. My head hurt.” Lorente again closed his eyes and stretched his body. He still felt dizzy but, from what he could see on his partner’s face, there was another terrible thing happened.

“Someone called, but he did not say anything, but I heard someone trying to kill him. What are we going to do?” Cornel looks confused while looking it to Lorente.

“Then, did you trace the number?” He asked.

The two become silent for a second.

“I think I know the answer now, you did, not right?” Lorente smirked.

He knew that his friend lost all his mind when something terrible happened in his surroundings, and that until now he couldn't understand why Cornel pushed himself to be a policeman.

“Don’t make a boastful face in front of me, you punk! Geez let’s go now!” Cornel said. He looked pissed but actually not.

Lorente’s POV

I let a heavy sigh, it would be easy for us if Cornel traced the number, but he did not. Now, I don’t know where we should search for a place, like a gym or something. But if our instinct is right, then we are heading to the right place.

“Do you think the guard will let us enter the University even though no one reports a case or something? It’s evening, we will disturb the students and other professors.” I looked at him in disbelief.

“Are you sure you asked me that when, in the first place, you were the one who suggested going to the university?!” I said.

“W-well, I suggested it because of the heat of the situation. Now I see how dark the surrounding, I take it back. We are not sure if the incident happened inside the University, if only I did trace the number then we know where should we go not like this.” Cornel look disappointed to himself, I just sighed.

“Don’t blame yourself I understand about it, even I was the one who answer the call I will stunned to. You did not expect it, no one expect it so stop and don’t make that kind of face.” I tried to calm him, but to be he was right about what he said but it’s already done.

And we can’t do anything about the thing that already done much better if I plan now better arriving in the University.

I look at the window and see how really dark the road, it so unusual that make me feel some creeps added to the few cars.

“Earlier, the traffic here on this road is too much that we wait almost an hour just to get to the restaurant but now I rarely see a car taking this road, what is real happening?”

“I don’t know, you see if something big happened then our station will be in chaotic situation but no, all of them look so calm. Not like us who everyday stress for this case.” I said.

I can’t still feel my hurt aching.

“By the way, I already know the answer why that woman poisons the young man. It’s not even related to the case we trying to solve,” I shift my gaze to Cornel who was driving.

“What do you mean? Did the woman said it by herself?” I asked.

“Yes, she did say that her step sister is pregnant and the who impregnate her is the young man in the University. The man slept whoever he wants and one of them is the woman who poisoned him.” He explains it to me.

I click my tongue, “so you mean she lied to us that someone give him the poison?”

“Maybe yes or not, maybe that person who contact her know what happened between her and the young boy that is why they give her the poison? This is to complicated because the two people involve are not even part of the University employees or students.” Cornel said.

“What can we do now, we have more cases do solve now, who killed the three students and who are the people behind the unknown poison who contact the two woman and manipulated them to kill someone.” I said.

We only stop to talk about it when we finally arrive at the gate of the University, the guard who’s on the round this time stop us to enter.

“Excuse me, Sir do you have something to do here at this hour?” He asked with the confused plastered in his face.

Well, anyone will be confused when no one inform them that some police man will be arrived suddenly.

“Yes, we need to check again the places where the crime happened or you can’t let us get inside?” I said, I did not let myself to look so desperate to get inside so he will be not suspicious to us.

“Oh, I can let you go inside. I think it’s better to let you so you can catch the culprit, to be honest we employees was afraid to that something bad happened to us. If only I don’t need money, I will resign here immediately but as of now I can see a new job to work.” The guard said.

“I think the culprit only harm the students, why are you guys so nervous?” Cornel asked him.

“Well you see, one of the janitors I know see a terrible thing and immediately passed his resignation but not the problem,” the lean to us and whisper. “He died just a blink of our eyes when he got outside if that gate someone’s car bumped him and ---” He did not continue what he was about to say when a loud sound catches our attention.

A loud noise from car alarm.

“I think it’s coming from the parking lot! Hurry!” I said and quickly got out of the car and run toward to the parking lot.

The sound become more louder than earlier make us to cover our ears.

“WAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!” The guard shout, his eyes winded as he staring at the left side.

“What the f*ck,” I can’t stop my self to curse when I see how the white car become red through the blood coming from the body of a young man on the top of it. “Cornel, call the station and send someone from paramedic and forensic team!” I shouted.

“Y-yes….” Cornel stuttered.

He was right, the person who called him earlier is one of the students of this University.

They really plan to kill someone when we are busy to other cases.

“What to do now, someone really died today. How can we explain it to the head officer?” Cornel problematic asked me.

“What else, we need to tell them that we have multiple case in our hand now and we can’t solve it all at once. All they know was to command and ask for result they not even help us about anything here.” I can’t help my self to say what I ma really thinking.

So, what now, I don’t care because that is the truth. We on the lower place do all the jobs but the promotions will always be them.

“W-well, you are right about that but what if they will pull out the case to us and give it to other?” Cornel again asked with the concerned look.

“Then we will let them have it, the case only of course all the details we gathered will remain with us and never share it to them.” I casually said.

He was about to speak when the other team arrived.

“where is the body?” One of them immediately asked Lorente, this is the same team who collected and check the crime scene the other day.

“In the left side of the corner, you can see it on top of the white car.” I casually answered him.

They will not share the information to me neither to Cornel so we better to look for the evidence on our own.

The look for some CCTV camera or black box from the nearest car where the crime happened hope, I can see one.

“Mr. Officer! It is good to see you here, how can you know there is a crime here at this hour?” Again, the school principal is here with the student assistant.

He smiled at me like greeting me without saying a word, I just nod my head as an answer.

“Well, where in the gate when we heard a loud sound from the parking lot.” I explain.

“But what are you doing here Officers in this hour? Is there something you need here so you come here even it’s already night and so dark on the road?” Now it’s the student assistant who speak.

“We just need to check again something here, you see we can’t even sleep about the cases happening inside of this University so we do our best to solve it immediately.” I seriously said.

I don’t know but something is off to him, like he knows something what is going on but he just let us to search and search like a fool and it make me angry even I am not sure about what I am feeling about it.

“Wow, it is nice to know there are really people who passionately and dedicate about their job.” He said again make me more irritated.

“Yes, like I said we need something here when we heard something then that is what we see. A young man who already dead and cover from his own blood. I don’t know if I should still request for CCTV footage for this night but can you guide us to the room when we can see what the whole happening here?” I said.

“Sure, we can help you about that. You, guide them where the CCTV room is.” The principal said the student can help but to guide us.

While we are walking, I can’t help to watch every step the student makes, there is no sound I can hear even mine I can’t here anything but Cornel said the step echoed.

“Can I ask something?” I said make the man stop and look at me.

“What is it?” He said and look at me again with his smile, sometimes I think it’s creepy every time he smiles like that.

“The step, where the part of parking lot echoed the step you make?” I know it sound ridiculous but I am really curious about the thing Cornel said while I can’t hear a step even the other team arrived.

“Oh, it will echo if you are in the second floor but not here. You still can’t say that the murderer did it on the top so he can push the body where the car was?” He said and the smile on his face added the chills I am feeling.

“Did you know something about what is happening right now?” I can’t help now myself to asked.
