The low hum of the vault’s security system was the only sound filling the cold room. Olivia’s breath hitched as Lucas stepped closer, his eyes sharp and unreadable. The calm, powerful man she thought she knew now seemed like a stranger cloaked in secrets.
“Lucas,” Olivia said, voice steady despite the pounding in her chest. “Why did you lock us in? What’s going on?”
He smiled, but it didn’t reach his eyes. “You asked for answers. Now you have my full attention.”
Maya shifted uneasily beside Olivia, her hand brushing against the control panel. Olivia caught the movement and nodded subtly.
“I never wanted you to get hurt,” Lucas said slowly, stepping toward the encrypted files. “But you need to understand. Gemini isn’t just a project. It’s a game of power, one I’m forced to play.”
Olivia’s mind raced. “Are you saying you’re behind the sabotage?”
“No,” Lucas replied, voice low. “But someone else is. Someone close. Someone who knows Gemini’s secrets better than anyone.”
“Who?” Maya demanded, voice sharp.
Lucas hesitated. “That’s the question, isn’t it? But it’s not just about Gemini. It’s about trust—who you can count on when everything falls apart.”
Olivia’s stomach twisted. She thought of her closest allies. Who had the motive? Who had the access? The room felt smaller, the walls closing in.
Suddenly, the vault’s lights flickered again, and the screen displayed a new message: “Time’s running out.”
Lucas’s face darkened. “They want Gemini destroyed before it goes public. But the true betrayal? It’s inside this room.”
Olivia’s eyes locked with his. “You’re telling me one of us is working against the company?”
He nodded slowly. “And I fear it’s someone you’d least expect.”
Maya glanced toward the door, as if it might suddenly open to reveal the traitor. Olivia’s mind reeled—if she couldn’t trust Lucas, could she trust anyone at all?
A sudden beep startled them all. Olivia looked down at her phone. A new message, just one word:
RUN.
Who sent the message? Is it a warning—or a trap? The vault door remains locked. Outside, unseen forces are closing in. Olivia must decide: trust Lucas, or break free on her own—and risk everything.
