Chapter 12

Alessia’s POV The sound of a tree branch cracking woke me from my sleep. I opened my eyes and saw the silhouette of a creature standing just a few feet in front of me. Slowly, I sat up and was startled to see a young bear staring back at me. I froze in fear, my heart racing. Where there was a baby, there was a mama. Taking a deep breath, I stood to my feet and slowly backed away, trying not to make any sudden movements. I eventually reached a safe distance and watched as the bear cub scampered away. A sigh of relief escaped me as I silently thanked my lucky stars. I glanced around, trying to see if any trails might lead to civilization. The thought made me laugh because the only form of civilization I knew was that of the Crestview Pack. Crestview was a small town, but it was the only place I had ever known. Having never ventured far from there, the idea of being completely lost was overwhelming. I stood there for a moment, contemplating whether I should go back. I thought about Jackie and wondered if she knew what had happened. From the beginning, I had planned to leave Crestview, but I had imagined my departure taking place under better circumstances. Deciding to push those feelings aside, I continued walking. I did not know where I was heading, but I knew that if I kept moving, I would eventually find something or someone. The sun was high in the sky, indicating that it was almost noon when I came across a small river. I stood there for a moment, contemplating my next move. I decided to follow the river, hoping it would lead me to a new place and a new beginning. As I walked along the bank, I heard something rustling in the bushes behind me. I turned around and saw three pairs of golden eyes. I froze in place as three wolves emerged from the brush. From what I could tell, they weren't rogues. Rogues had a distinct smell, and they were always dirty and matted. These wolves were healthy and clean, but that didn't mean they weren't dangerous. Suddenly, one of the wolves shifted before me, and a man appeared. He had a mess of brown hair on his head, and his brown eyes were kind but piercing. The warmth in his eyes distracted me so much that I hadn't even realized he was standing before me in all his glory until he spoke. "Who are you? What is your name?" he asked. I remained silent, glancing between him and the two wolves standing behind him. "I asked you a question," the man said, sounding a little more annoyed this time. "A-Alessia," I replied, lowering my eyes in submission. "What are you doing out this way?" he asked. "I-I'm sorry, but I was just following the river. I-I didn't mean any harm," I told him. He stared at me for a few moments before stepping closer. "Where are you from, Alessia?" he asked. I nervously shifted my weight from one foot to the other. I could feel my heart racing as I tried to figure out what to say. "I don't have a pack, if that's what you're asking," I replied, my voice barely a whisper. He simply stared at me, his expression unreadable. I held my breath, waiting for his response. Finally, he nodded and walked away. Then, he turned back to me. "Come with us," he said. As I followed him, the other two wolves followed right behind me, almost as if they were guarding me. After about fifteen minutes of walking, we came to a clearing that led to a lush green meadow. In the center of the meadow stood a beautiful stone structure surrounded by a small lake. Just beyond the lake were several homes. This was the first time I had ever seen anything like it. "Where are we?" I asked. "Onyx Fang Pack. Our Alpha is away, so we will take you to see our Beta. He will instruct us on what to do with you," he replied. He reached for a small bag hidden behind a bush, pulled out a pair of sweatpants, and put them on. We continued walking toward a vast, two-story house. I couldn't help but admire the beautiful landscape of the front yard. The other two wolves trotted off as we entered the house. Once inside, we were greeted by a woman who introduced herself as Margaret, the housekeeper. She welcomed me and offered me something to drink. I declined her offer by shaking my head and smiling at her. "This way," the man said, gesturing toward a small staircase. We made our way up the stairs and down a long hallway until we reached a large room at the end. Inside stood a large desk, and behind it sat a man with a serious expression on his face as he typed away on his laptop. "Logan, what brought you in today?" the man asked without looking up. I couldn't see his entire face, but his voice sounded familiar. "We found this young woman out by the western border," Logan said, stepping aside. I stood frozen, unsure of what would happen next. Then, the man behind the computer stood up and looked directly at me. At that moment, I realized it was Beta Dominic. A wave of calmness washed over me as I watched him step away from his desk and approach me. Concern filled his eyes. "You!" Beta Dominic exclaimed. "Dominic, you know her?" Logan asked, his brows furrowing in confusion. "Get Doctor Sara over here, fast! And have someone prepare one of the rooms on the Alpha floor as well," Dominic ordered
