CHAPTER -7

311 Words
After two years. Evelyn stood in front of the mirror, trying to decide whether she cared enough to put on heels or just wear the flats and deal with her mother’s judgmental glances later. Her phone buzzed. [Mom]: “Wear something elegant. I have a surprise for you tonight 😉” Evelyn narrowed her eyes. Ugh. That emoji was never a good sign. Just then, her doorbell rang. She opened it to find her mother standing there with her usual grace, lips curled into a knowing smile, eyes scanning Evelyn head to toe. Evelyn crossed her arms. “Okay. What’s the surprise? Please tell me it’s not another blind date with your friend’s weird, emotionally constipated son.” Her mom chuckled, walking inside like she owned the place. “No blind dates, sweetheart. Just dinner. With both our families.” Evelyn raised a brow. “Both our families? As in... Lucian’s family too?” Her mom’s smile grew just a bit too smug. “Yes.” Evelyn groaned. “Why? So I can stab him with a butter knife in front of witnesses?” Her mother laughed softly, brushing a strand of Evelyn’s hair behind her ear. “Can’t you two behave for one evening without biting each other’s heads off? Just be... civil. For me.” Evelyn gave her a deadpan look. “Being civil to Lucian Blackwood is like being polite to a hurricane.” Her mom didn’t flinch. “Just wear something nice. And try not to argue, hmm? You never know... tonight might change everything.” Evelyn narrowed her eyes suspiciously. “What kind of surprise is this, exactly?” Her mom winked. “You’ll find out at dinner.” Evelyn groaned again, louder this time. “Why do your surprises always feel like impending doom?” Her mother only smiled. “Because they usually are.”
