“Okay, but hear me out,” Lucy whispered with a mischievous grin as she lay on the bed beside Evelyn, legs tangled in a blanket burrito. “What if… we prank call Lucian?”
Evelyn raised an eyebrow. “That man barely has a soul. How do you prank someone who doesn’t feel anything?”
Lucy giggled. “Exactly! That’s the challenge.”
Evelyn smirked. “You’re chaotic.”
“And you love it.”
She reached for her phone. “Okay, blocked number. You just say you’re pregnant with his child and he left when you found out. Let’s see if Mr. Robot melts.”
Evelyn’s jaw dropped. “You are actually insane.”
“Do it. For heartbreak healing. I swear it’ll be therapeutic.”
Evelyn hesitated… then snatched the phone. “Fine. If I go to hell for this, I’m dragging you with me.”
She hit the call button.
Lucy muffled her laughter under the pillow as the phone rang… once… twice—
Click.
“Hello?”
Evelyn instantly put on a trembling voice. “Lucian… it’s me.”
Pause.
“…Who?”
Evelyn sniffled dramatically. “You really forgot me? After everything?”
Lucian’s voice sharpened. “Who is this?”
“I’m… I’m pregnant, Lucian,” she said, biting her lip to stop from laughing. “I’m carrying your child… and you just left the moment you found out.”
Dead silence.
Lucy was wheezing into the blanket, trying not to explode.
Evelyn kept going, voice soft and tragic. “I can’t do this alone. Our baby deserves a father…”
“…What the actual—”
Lucian’s tone dropped ten degrees. “Who are you?”
“I’m the woman you left. The one you promised forever to. The one who—who gave you everything!”
“You need serious help,” he snapped, clearly rattled. “I don’t even know who the hell you are—”
Evelyn sniffed dramatically. “You told me I was the only one… right after that night in your car—”
Click.
Call ended.
And that’s when the girls exploded in laughter.
Evelyn dropped the phone, clutching her stomach. “His voice! He sounded like his brain blue-screened!”
Lucy was crying with laughter. “You said ‘that night in your car’! Ev, he’s going to throw his entire phone away!”
“I bet he’s sitting in bed questioning every female he’s ever spoken to.”
They high-fived, giggling until their stomachs hurt.
But just down the hall…
Lucian sat up in bed, staring at his phone with narrowed eyes, his jaw tight.
He knew exactly who that voice sounded like.
Evelyn Hart.
And he was not amused.
