I refused to let them see how flustered I was becoming under the molten heat of Hunter's predatory stare. Squaring my shoulders, I met his penetrating gaze with studied nonchalance.
As much as part of me felt that electric pull toward the intoxicating mixture of danger and raw masculinity he exuded, I wasn't about to lose my head so easily. I'd always prided myself on being the level-headed, book-smart one who didn't get swept up in shallow high school dramas.
"We'll see about that," I echoed my earlier words to Hunter evenly, keeping my tone neutral.
His full lips quirked in an almost imperceptible smile, like he could sense the forced calm I was trying to project. The weight of his stare appraised me as if I were a fascinating new species of creature he'd never quite encountered before. It was unnerving...and thrilling at the same time.
The moment stretched out taut between us, alive with unspoken tension and a sudden undercurrent I couldn't quite read. Was it mutual intrigue? Thinly veiled hostility? Some potent, primal combination of both that had us caught in this strange gravitational lock?
A loud clap of thunder shook the rickety bus, shattering our weighty stare-off. Hunter's expression hardened again as he turned back toward the windshield, effectively ending our cryptic interlude as abruptly as it had begun.
I let out a slow, steadying breath, annoyed at how thrown I suddenly felt yet strangely invigorated too. What was it about Hunter Westbrook that made me feel like my molecules were being rearranged from the inside out?
Our driver finally gave up waiting for roadside assistance and reluctantly broke the uncomfortable silence. "Listen up, folks. I just got word that no tow truck can make it up these mountain roads in this nasty storm system that's rolled in."
A chorus of dismayed groans and objections filled the bus as he held up a hand. "We ain't got no other choice but to ride it out here 'til the worst of the downpour passes. I'm aiming to get y'all back to civilization by nightfall."
"You can't be serious!" Jessica shrieked from across the aisle. "We're going to be trapped here all night with no signal in the middle of nowhere?"
"Look, I don't like this any more than you do, miss," the driver said gruffly. "But unless any of y'all want to test your luck hiking miles in a flood warning, we're staying put for now."
More panicked protests erupted, but I turned most of it out, watching the deluge of rain pounding against the bus in wind-whipped sheets. The hair on the back of my neck suddenly stood on end as if...electricity was crackling through the air.
I realized with a start that I felt Hunter's scorching stare burning into me once again. Against my better judgment, some intense gravitational pull dragged my gaze toward him, only to find him devouring me with that same blazing look from before.
My breath caught in my throat as his heavy-lidded eyes roamed over me with unmistakable intent. A hint of something feral sharpened his exquisite features - a predator carefully evaluating its prey.
Raw, primal attraction flooded through me, heating my skin with a delirious flush from the inside out despite the chill of the storm. Hunter's powerful body was practically vibrating with unleashed energy, a coiled force of nature longing to break loose.
And some reckless, thrill-seeking part of me...wanted to be the one to make it.
Where the hell had that insane thought come from? I didn't even recognize myself anymore because of how easily this brooding bad boy was obliterating my usual senses.
Tearing my eyes away before my vivid imagination could wander any farther down that dangerous path, I tried refocusing on the torrential rain hammering the windshield.
I needed to pull myself together before this whole stranded situation spiraled any further out of control. Our circumstances were bad enough without me getting lost in some weird, inappropriate lust trance over the human personification of tall, smoldering, and effortlessly charismatic.
Hunter's voice drifted over to me then, rich and taunting like liquid velvet caressing my senses. "Something on your mind, new girl?"
Was he reading my mind or something with that freakishly intuitive perception of his? Swallowing hard, I risked another glance at him to find those devastatingly gorgeous features twisted in a self-assured smirk.
He knew. Somehow he knew exactly what kind of deliciously forbidden thoughts were dancing through my head just from looking at him. And worst of all, he seemed to be relishing every ounce of my tormented yearning, not even trying to mask it behind polite decorum.
With a nonchalant yawn, he reclined further back and draped his muscular arms across the back of the seat in a blatant display of unadulterated male dominance. Practically preening his magnificence to ensure my downright sinful appraisal.
Two could play this game of seeing who would c***k first from the outrageous tension. Gathering myself, I turned toward him with an innocent mask of naïveté.
"Not a thing, Hunter," I lied through my teeth smoothly. "Although...I can't help wondering what it'll be like spending the night essentially trapped together in such intimate quarters."
His confident smirk spread into a wolfish grin at my seeming acknowledgment of the elephant in the room - the pure, unapologetic heat simmering between us that was quickly becoming impossible to deny or ignore any longer.
"I guess we'll just have to wait and see," he mused, voice dipping into a gravelly baritone that had sparks dancing across my skin. "I've got a feeling things have a way of...happening for a reason."
Hunter's loaded words hung heavy between us and I gulped, knowing there'd be no mistaking his clear insinuation. Something seismic was shifting here in ways I didn't fully understand.
And heaven help me, against all logic and reason...I wanted to dive straight into the heart of that raging, primal undertow with this fascinating new boy, no matter how dangerous the consequences might ultimately prove.
Little did I know that any rational thoughts would soon be swept away for good once I saw the full depths of what Hunter Westbrook really was...
