Choosing Each Other

340 Words
The rain didn’t come that evening. The sky stayed clear, washed pale blue, like it was giving them a quiet chance to breathe. Aarav noticed it when he locked up the café—how strange it felt to not hear rain when everything else finally felt settled. Reyan stayed. Not hovering. Not half-packed. Just there. They walked home together, steps slow, shoulders brushing. No one rushed ahead. No one checked the road for exits. “I keep waiting for the fear to come back,” Reyan admitted as they crossed the empty street. Aarav glanced at him. “It will.” Reyan stopped walking. “That’s it? That’s your answer?” Aarav smiled gently. “Fear doesn’t disappear when you love someone. You just stop letting it decide for you.” Reyan let that sink in. Later, they sat inside the café long after closing, lights low, chairs stacked around them like quiet witnesses. Reyan traced circles on the table absentmindedly. “I don’t want to be temporary,” he said. “Not with you.” Aarav reached across the table, covering Reyan’s hand. “Then don’t be.” Reyan’s breath caught. “What if I mess up?” “Then we talk,” Aarav replied. “We don’t vanish.” That was new. For both of them. Reyan squeezed his hand. “I’m choosing you. Even on days I want to run.” Aarav’s eyes softened. “I’m choosing you. Even when staying feels heavy.” The words settled into the room, steady and real. Reyan leaned forward, pressing a soft kiss to Aarav’s forehead—no rush, no desperation. Just comfort. Outside, the town moved on quietly. Buses passed. People went home. The world didn’t end or explode or make announcements. Inside the café, something rare happened. Two people chose each other without asking for guarantees. When the clock ticked toward 5:40 pm the next day, the bell rang as usual. But this time, it wasn’t the sound of something beginning. It was the sound of something continuing.
