The Space Between Cups

Reyan came back the next day. At 5:39 pm. Aarav noticed because he checked the clock twice, pretending he wasn’t waiting. The rain hadn’t stopped since morning. It soaked the town in a dull gray, turning the streets quiet and heavy. Aarav was arranging cups when the café door opened, the familiar bell ringing softly. Reyan stepped in, less drenched this time, a faint smile playing on his lips like he knew something Aarav didn’t. “You’re early,” Aarav said before he could stop himself. Reyan raised an eyebrow. “So you do keep track.” Aarav felt heat rise to his ears. “I just… noticed.” Reyan laughed quietly and took the same seat by the window. The same cup. The same coffee. Aarav didn’t ask how he liked it. He already knew. They sat in a comfortable silence, broken only by the sound of rain and the occasional bus passing outside. Reyan watched the street like it might answer a question he’d been carrying for a long time. “Do you ever want to leave this place?” Reyan asked. Aarav paused. “Sometimes.” “Why don’t you?” Aarav thought for a moment. “Someone has to stay.” Reyan looked at him then, really looked. “You’re like this café,” he said. “Quiet, but warm. Easy to miss if you don’t slow down.” Aarav didn’t know how to respond to that. Reyan leaned back in his chair. “I move around a lot. Staying in one place makes me restless.” Aarav imagined Reyan in other cities, other cafés, smiling at other people. The thought left something hollow behind his ribs. “Then why come here every day?” Aarav asked softly. Reyan smiled, but there was something fragile in it. “Because here… I don’t feel like I have to run.” The clock ticked louder than usual. When Reyan stood to leave, he hesitated, fingers tapping against the table. “I’ll come again tomorrow,” he said. “If that’s okay.” Aarav nodded, his chest tightening. “It’s okay.” Reyan stepped closer to the counter this time. Close enough that Aarav could smell rain on his clothes, see the small scar near his eyebrow. “Goodnight, Aarav.” “Goodnight.” After Reyan left, Aarav realized something terrifying and wonderful all at once. He was no longer just waiting for the rain. He was waiting for Reyan.
