Isa sat across from her father in the dimly lit study of their family estate. The smell of aged whiskey and cigar smoke lingered in the air, a scent she had long associated with a life she never wanted to be a part of. Her father, Antonio Romano, looked older than she remembered, his once-imposing frame now burdened with years of secrets and sins.
“Isa, I need you to listen carefully,” Antonio said, his voice low but firm. “This isn’t a request. It’s a necessity.”
Isa’s jaw tightened. “I haven’t been part of your world in years, Dad. Why am I here?”
Antonio sighed, rubbing a hand down his face. “Because war is coming. And you are the only thing that can stop it.”
She scoffed. “Me? What do I have to do with your business?”
Her father leaned forward, his sharp gaze pinning her in place. “Adrian Costa has enemies—dangerous ones. If we don’t align with him, our family will be the first to fall. The only way to secure that alliance is for you to be his fiancée.”
Silence.
The words hung in the air, suffocating her. Isa let out a breathless laugh, shaking her head. “You can’t be serious.”
“I am.”
“This is insane. You want me to fake a relationship with a mafia boss?”
Antonio’s expression hardened. “No, Isabella. I want you to survive.”
Her stomach twisted. She had spent her whole life trying to escape this world. And now, it was dragging her back in.
Then, the study door creaked open. A figure stepped inside—tall, powerful, and radiating a quiet menace that sent a shiver down her spine.

His dark eyes met hers, unreadable yet intense. “Well,” he murmured, a smirk playing at his lips. “Looks like we’re engaged.”
