He Feels Like Sin

The confession stayed inside her bloodstream long after she left the penthouse. If someone hurts you… I stop caring what kind of person I become afterward. Dr. Chloe Rain replayed the words repeatedly while rain blurred across the taxi windows during the drive home. Most women would’ve heard danger. Threat. Violence. And Chloe did hear those things. That was the problem. She understood exactly how terrifying James Dean Luca truly was. Which meant the heat curling low inside her chest afterward made absolutely no psychological sense. Because fear should create distance. Not desire. Yet every morally wrong thing about James only seemed to pull her deeper into emotional dependency. That terrified her more than Orpheus. By the time she reached her apartment, dawn had started bleeding pale silver across the skyline. She unlocked the door carefully. Empty. Silent. Still. But after the break-in, silence no longer felt peaceful. Now it felt watchful. Chloe moved through the apartment turning on lights automatically while exhaustion dragged heavily beneath her skin. The walls suddenly felt unfamiliar. Unsafe. Like danger had already learned the shape of her life. Her phone vibrated. One message. James. Text me when you’re inside. Her pulse reacted instantly. God. Even something simple from him felt intimate now. Possessive. Protective. Addictive. Chloe stared at the message for several seconds before finally typing back. I’m home. Three dots appeared immediately. Lock the bedroom window tonight. Cold slid beneath her ribs. Why? No response. Fear rose sharply. She called him instantly. James answered on the first ring. “What happened.” “Nothing yet.” Yet. The word hit her hard. “What do you mean yet?” Silence. Then softly— “Orpheus watches behavioral reactions.” Chloe moved toward the bedroom automatically. “He’ll escalate proximity after fear loses effectiveness.” Her stomach tightened. “You think he’ll come back.” “Yes.” No hesitation. No comfort. Just truth. And somehow that honesty frightened her more than lies ever could. Chloe locked the bedroom window with trembling fingers. “You sound very certain.” “I know how men like him think.” The words settled heavily into the room. Because James never said people like him. Always men like him. Like he stood dangerously close to understanding monsters from the inside. “You know what scares me?” Chloe whispered. James exhaled quietly through the phone. “That you sound calmer talking about predators than normal people?” Her breath caught instantly. Because yes. Exactly that. He understood her thoughts before she finished forming them now. “You shouldn’t know me this well.” A pause. “But I do.” The low softness in his voice wrapped around her like heat. And suddenly Chloe hated how much comfort she found inside conversations that should’ve terrified her. She sat slowly on the edge of the bed. “You know what’s happening to me psychologically?” James remained quiet. “I’m associating safety with the same person who makes me question my morality.” Thunder rolled softly outside. “You think wanting me makes you a bad person,” he murmured. “Yes.” “No.” His answer came instantly. “It makes you human.” Chloe laughed bitterly. “That sounds dangerously close to justification.” “Maybe.” The honesty again. Always devastating honesty. “You never pretend to be better than you are,” she whispered. James went silent for several seconds. Then: “That’s because I know exactly what I am.” The words lingered inside her chest painfully. Monster. Protector. Manipulator. Lover. Every version of James existed simultaneously now. And Chloe no longer knew which one she craved most. “Go to sleep,” he said quietly. “You first.” A faint pause. Then unexpectedly— a soft laugh. Low. Real. The sound affected her instantly. God. Even his laughter felt sinful now. “You’re impossible,” James murmured. “You say that like you don’t enjoy it.” “I enjoy you too much.” The confession hit harder than it should have. Because his voice changed when he admitted things like that. Less controlled. More human. And that humanity was infinitely more dangerous than intimidation. Chloe leaned back slowly against the headboard. “You know what the worst part is?” “What.” “The case should be the thing consuming me.” Her throat tightened softly. “But lately…” A pause. “…wanting you feels more dangerous.” Silence swallowed the line completely. Heavy breathing. Mutual understanding. Then James spoke quietly. “That’s because the case threatens your life.” His voice lowered. “And I threaten who you become.” Heat moved sharply through her chest. Because yes. That was exactly it. Orpheus frightened her physically. But James? James altered her psychologically. He made darkness feel seductive. Morality feel flexible. Control feel intimate. And every time she moved closer to him, she felt pieces of herself changing shape. “You know what I think?” Chloe whispered. James waited. “I think you feel like sin because part of me already knows loving you would cost something.” Another silence. Then softly— “It would.” No denial. No fake reassurance. Only truth sharp enough to hurt. Chloe closed her eyes briefly. “You make honesty sound cruel.” “No.” His voice lowered almost to a whisper. “I make it sound expensive.” The words settled deep inside her. Because that was what this felt like now. Not romance. A transaction with consequences. And somehow she kept moving closer anyway. “You should stop calling me at night,” she murmured softly. “But you sleep better after hearing my voice.” Her eyes opened instantly. “How do you know that.” “Because your breathing changes after five minutes.” God. That terrifying attention again. James noticed everything. Every emotional shift. Every behavioral pattern. Every vulnerability. And the worst part? Part of her loved being observed that carefully. “Do you realize how dangerous you sound?” she whispered. “Yes.” “And that doesn’t bother you?” A pause. “It bothers me that you still stay.” The honesty nearly ruined her. Because beneath all his control, James sounded genuinely affected by her too. Like this obsession wasn’t one-sided anymore. Maybe it never had been. The room fell quiet except for rain tapping softly against the glass. Chloe’s fingers tightened around the phone. “Tell me something honest.” James exhaled slowly. “I’ve told you too many honest things already.” “Another one.” Silence. Then quietly— “When you left tonight…” His voice roughened slightly. “…I almost followed you home.” Heat flooded through her instantly. “Why.” “Because every instinct I have keeps trying to make sure you’re safe.” A pause. “And I don’t trust those instincts anymore.” Emotion hit her unexpectedly hard. Because she understood exactly what he meant. Protection and possession lived dangerously close together psychologically. And James existed in that gray space constantly. “You know what scares me?” he asked suddenly. Chloe’s pulse slowed. “What.” “That I’m starting to need your presence to feel calm.” The confession wrapped around her throat softly. Because James Dean Luca did not seem like a man who needed anyone. Yet here he was. Emotionally exposed at nearly dawn while rain drowned the city outside. And Chloe realized something devastating: the darkness between them had started becoming intimate. Not just s****l. Emotional. “You’re quiet again,” James murmured. “I’m thinking.” “That’s never safe where I’m concerned.” A faint smile touched her lips despite herself. “There’s the manipulative confidence again.” “No.” His voice softened. “That’s fear.” The answer startled her. “What.” “You’re becoming important to me.” The words shattered through her completely. Not dramatic. Worse. Gentle. Honest. Real. And suddenly Chloe understood why emotionally dangerous people were so addictive. Because they rarely loved halfway. When someone like James cared, it consumed everything around it. Logic. Boundaries. Morality. Fear. “You shouldn’t say things like that,” she whispered. “I know.” “But you keep doing it.” “Yes.” “Why.” Silence filled the room again. Then finally— “Because if this ends badly…” His voice lowered painfully. “…I need you to know none of this was fake for me.” Her chest tightened so sharply it almost hurt. God. He sounded like a man already expecting destruction. And maybe he should. Because nothing about this relationship felt survivable anymore. Not emotionally. Not psychologically. Not morally. But Chloe still couldn’t let go. That was the terrifying part. “You know what I realized tonight?” she whispered softly. “What.” “If another woman told me this story professionally…” A faint bitter smile touched her lips. “…I’d tell her to run.” James laughed quietly under his breath. “Good advice.” “But I don’t want to run.” The confession echoed between them. Raw. Intimate. Dangerous. James inhaled slowly. “Chloe.” “No,” she whispered. “Don’t talk me out of it.” His silence felt heavy afterward. Like restraint physically hurting him. “You make terrible decisions where I’m concerned,” he murmured. “And you make danger feel beautiful.” Lightning flashed softly beyond the apartment windows. For a moment neither spoke. Neither hung up. Just breathing together through distance and darkness. And somewhere deep inside herself— Dr. Chloe Rain finally admitted the truth she had been avoiding for weeks: She was no longer falling for James Dean Luca despite the danger. She was falling because of it.
