GRACE'S POV
"Here drink this. It'll cool you dowm" Mr Jack said as he gave me the glass of water.
At first, I felt like throwing it away and asking him what exactly happened at home that made him send for me. But on a second thought, I knew he genuinely cared and wanted me to feel relaxed before he breaks the news.
"Thank you sir, oh it's cold". I said as I took the glass of water from him.
"My bad, I'm sorry. Do you want a warm one, I can get that for you". He said as he reached out for another glass .
"No sir, I'm fine with this. It'll do just fine, beside I feel a hot". I said
"Oh yes, the Air Conditioner isn't working for now. I've called the repair man to fix it, he'll be here tomorrow". He said
"Alright sir. I'm relaxed, I'm calm. Can you please tell me what the news is all about?" I said trying to hard to remain as calm as I could be.
"Are you sure you're calm, Grace?" Mr Jack asked as he though he could see right through me.
I wasn't actually calm as I said I was. I was steadily tapping my feet against the floor and my palms were a little wet.
I've always been this way whenever I'm expecting a news, a gift, or anything else.
I remember the day my Mum got me a teddy bear as a Christmas gift when I was eight. That morning, we all gathered in the living room as we all presented our gifts to one another. But of course, my Mum will never let us open the presents until we had a daily devotion.
During the whole thirty minutes of the devotion, I kept tapping my feet uncontrollably against the floor.
"Yes sir. I am calm now". I replied to Mr Jack.
"Okay. It's with a heavy heart that I am forced to announce the death of your Mother". He said
"What! What did you just say?" I asked in shock
"Your father just called the school, he said she died in an accident. He's requesting that you come home". Said Mr Jack
"It can't be. My mother isn't dead. She's well alive, I dreamt of her yesterday, she was full of life in the dream and I'm sure she is physically... No it can't be" I muttered to myself, as I fell on the floor
"Anyone there! Please come! Anyone! Please help!" Mr Jack shouted as he tried to help me stand
"Come on Grace, please stay with me. Grace! Anyone! Please help!" He continued shouting till two teachers came in.
"What's the problem sir, what happened?" They asked
"She just fell down in shock. Please let's take her to the nurse's clinic". Mr Jack suggested
"No, it can't be. My mum isn't dead, no she isn't". I kept muttering as I closed my eyes faintly.
"Where am I ? What I'm I doing here? Where is my mother?" I asked the woman sitting in front of me.
"Hey Grace, it's me Nurse Sade, I guess you still haven't regained consciousness yet. You're in the school's clinic".
"I have to go home now. I have to see my mother". I said, as I tried to get up from the hospital bed
"Oh no you don't! You are in no condition to walk around, please stay here for a while until I'm sure it's safe for you to go".
*Where is my daughter? Where is she? What happened to my daughter?" I heard a voice yelling.
"Hi sir, she's safe for now. Come, let me take you to her". Cynthia said as she directed my father to the door of the hospital clinic where I was
"Darling. Are you okay? Are you fine?" My dad said.
"Yes dad, I'm okay". I said, holding his hands.
"She collapsed and fainted after the Dean announced the death of her mother to her, luckily she's okay now". Cynthia said as she reached out for my hands
"Why Grace? First, your mother left me. Now you want to leave me too?". My father said, as he began to cry.
"No dad, I didn't mean to.... I'm sorry". I said as I wiped the tears off his cheeks.
"Okay sir, since you're here then I think it's safe for her to go home now". Nurse Sade said
"Oh no, I'll stay until she recovers fully. I want her to be completely fine before we leave". My father said
"Okay sir, if you insist".
*Hey Grace, some classmates are here to see you. They brought some presents for you". Cynthia said as she stood up to open the door
"Wait! Is Josh among them?". I asked
"Of course, he is. Remember that you didn't get to help him with the Biology test". Cynthia said
"Oh, that's true. I'm sure he must have written the wrong answers". I said feeling sad for him
"Well, not entirely. I helped a little bit". Cynthia said as she turned to the other side of the wall.
"Really? See, I knew you had a kind heart underneath all that cruelty of yours". I said smiling at her
"Well, you caused it". She said as she walked towards the door
"Alright, darling. I'll leave you to your friends for a while, I love you". My father said.
"Thanks Dad, I love you too". I replied
"Hey!!! Look who's on an hospital bed, Encyclopedia!!!" Said Josh, as everyone laughed.
"You again. Hey, I'm sorry I didn't get to help you with the Biology test. I'm truly sorry". I said, as I reached for my purse
"No, don't mention. I'm glad you're okay now". Josh said as he winked at me
"Who are you winking at? Wait, I can't find the money you gave me for the Burgers". I said
"Why? What do you need them for ?". Josh asked
"Well, since I didn't fulfil the end of the bargain, I felt it's only right to return the money back to you. That's if you don't mind" I said, hoping he'll let it go
"Oh, no worries. I snuck in here when you were asleep to take back my money. So it's fine". He said, smiling in a funny way
"Gosh, when will you ever change". I said as everyone laughed together.
My Dad and I finally got home. It felt so quiet and sad, I still couldn't believe my mother was gone. But I had to get it together for I knew that Dad was also hurting, probably the most.
Few months ago, my Dad got fired from his workplace over a dispute. And ever since then, Mother has been providing for the family.
She has been the breadwinner of the family, and this made my Dad feel so sad and frustrated at times. But Mum always found a way to make him feel better, she would say; "one day you'll own a company, and no one, I mean no one will be able to sack you".
Later that night, we ate dinner and had our routine night prayer. Of course, it felt incomplete without Mum, but we had no choice. I know that wherever sh was, she would have wanted us to have our daily Night Prayers and Morning Devotions, with or without her presence.
I went to bed that night with hope that when I wake up in the morning, I'd see my Mum standing in front of me like she always does.
Later that night, I had a dream about my mother. In the dream, she looked healthy and very much alive. I tried to touch her but I couldn't, I asked her why and she said ; "honey, I'm dead. You can't touch even if you wanted to".
Upon hearing those words, I started crying. "Why did you leave us alone". I asked her
"I'd never mean to leave you. I never left you when I was alive, and even up till now, I'm still with you". She replied
"Then why can't we see you here with us?". I asked
"Well, it's true you can't see me in Physical, but I'm always with you no matter the situation". She replied
"Where? Are you so I can come find you?". I asked
"Right there, in your heart. Whenever you need me I'll always be there, waiting". She replied
"I miss you mum, so very much". I said
"I miss you too my darling. But I have to tell you something". She said
"What mum? What?". I asked
"You have to be strong dear. You have to be strong for what lies ahead". She replied
"What do you mean, I have to be strong?". I asked
"Tell me what you mean?". I asked
"I have to go now. Take care my darling" she said as she began to fade
"No! Don't go! Come back Mum! Tell me what you mean" I yelled, but I couldn't see her anymore.
Few minutes later, I heard someone call out my name. It sounded like a female's voice;
"Grace, Grace!!! Wake up, Grace"
"Mum, is that you?". I asked as I stood up to see who it was......
