Dylan woke me with the same words he had used for decades. “Still choosing you today.” I smiled before I even opened my eyes. “Still choosing you back.” He kissed my forehead and settled against the pillows. Morning light filtered through the curtains. The house was quiet. No small feet running down the hallway. No teenage voices arguing over the bathroom. Just the two of us and the soft sound of birds outside. “Coffee?” he asked. “Please.” I listened to him move around the kitchen. The familiar clink of mugs. The low hum of the machine. When he returned he handed me my cup exactly the way I liked it and sat on the edge of the bed. “Sleep well?” he asked. “I did.
