Chapter 4 I walked to my room. The whole mansion was quiet, too quiet. I gently laid down not knowing when I dosed off the moment I opened my eyes it was morning again that meant I had to go back k to school. I seriously felt irritated on my first day, especially by Chloe. I arrived and I saw Amelia waiting for me by my locker. She always carried that warm smile on her face, then all of a sudden I mistakenly bumped into someone, why I looked up it was Chloe. “Ewww, why does she have to touch me?” Chole said, whipping her body with her handkerchief, I didn't respond, I just smiled and made my way through the crowd. Amelia followed behind. “Why did you let her talk to you in that manner?” Amelia asked. While I just smiled but the gossip didn't stop there it continued, by the time Alexander stepped inside everyone went silent. It seemed they were scared of him. At one point I glanced at Chloe staring at him as if she was about to drown. “What the hell is wrong with everyone?” I said to Amelia , then she smiled softly. “Nothing just the usual.” “The usual?” My eyes immediately caught Alexander's when he broke eye contact , three things I had learned about London was. Firstly, rich people were exhausting. Secondly, London weather couldn't make up its mind and thirdly, everyone was completely obsessed with Alexander Blackwood. But seriously, it was ridiculous. I slammed my locker shut and adjusted the strap of my bag, “someone looks annoyed.” I turned and still found Amelia smiling at me “do l?” “A little.” “What a little?” I laughed despite myself Amelia has become the closest thing I had since moving to London, unlike everyone else, she didn't seem interested in gossiping or popularity but the. The craziest thing was that she was dating Alexander's best friend. Amelia acted normal which she was surprisingly refreshing, we started walking towards our next class, the hallway was filled with conversation, students stood in groups, laughing and talking about that reminds my of my old school movie stared holding of my bag. I was beginning not to feel like a complete outsider, not comfortable, but better. Suddenly I heard someone called out my name, “that's her.” I turned and I know it wasn't be good. Amelia sighed, “ignore them.” I follow her gaze and saw it was Chloe and her group, all of them were watching me as they stood near the stairscase, wonderful. “What do did I ever do to them?” “Your exist.” Amelia said. “My what? What is that it.” “Pretty much.’ I shook my head, “people here needed hobbies.” Amelia laughed but unfortunately Chloe chose that moment to walk over. Both her and her witch crew, or I meant friends followed behind her like bodyguards or vulture I hadn't decided which yet. “Hi!” Hey eyes travel over to my clothes, ‘you seen ti be settling in.” Chloe gently said , I started at her. “I'm trying.” “That's nice.” But they was something in her voice that made my uneasy, something sharp beneath the kindness. She glanced around dramaticly “so tell us.” I frowned, “tell you what.” She dramatically crossed her arms, “what it’s like living with Alexander.” And there it was again Alexander, always Alexander. I was starting to think these people needed professional help, “I wouldn't know.” The girls looked confused, “but you both live in the same house.” “Yeah so?” Chloe blinked, “so you see home everyday.” “Well unfortunately.” A few students nearby laughed I noticed Chloe's smile flattered slightly, good maybe she wasn't used to people answering back. “You're funny.” “ Thanks.” “I wasn't complementing you.” “That's okay. I wasn't trying to impress you either.’ Amelia looked like she was trying not to laugh and Chloe, she looked like she wanted to throw me off the neatdt building. Which was progress, the hallway grew quieter more students watched now, fantabulous, exactly what I needed. Chloe stepped closer with her arms still crossed. “You know, some people thinks it's convenient.” I narrowed my eyes, “what is?” “Your mother's marriage.’ that works Hits harder that I expected, the laughter around us vanished. Even Amelia looked uncomfortable, I already knew what Chloe was implying to gold digger, money and statues. The same thing people had whispered since mom married Richard, anger flared inside me, “my mother's marriage isn't your business.” Chloe struggled, “ just repeating what people kept saying.” “Then maybe people should mind their own business,” for a second. I thought that would end it, but I was wrong. “You seem pretty comfortable having their blackwood name.” the comment stung me because part of me was already worried about that, a part of me wondered of people would ever see me as anything other than Richard's step daughter. I opened my mouth, then another voice spoke, first or was cold, sharp, dangerous. “Is there a problem here.” The entire hallway went silent, everyone turned but I didn't because I already knew who it was. Alexander, Chloe immediately stepped back. The confidence she'd shown moment earlier vanished, interesting very interesting. He stood a few feet away, his hand eye shove into his pocket. His expression unreadable, yet somehow everyone seemed nervous, even me, he looked at Chloe, “what exactly is going on?”
