Beneath the Surface

The basement was colder than Aria expected, like the air had never known warmth. She followed Damian down the narrow staircase, her flashlight flickering with every step. The walls were lined with symbols etched deep, glowing faintly, pulsing like veins. “This is where it began,” Damian said, his voice low. “Where my grandfather made the pact.” Aria stepped closer. Her fingers brushed one of the carvings. It throbbed beneath her skin, warm, alive, watching. A whisper curled through the room. Not a voice. A feeling. Hunger!. Damian moved in front of her. “It knows you’re here.” “What does it want?” she asked, her voice barely steady. He turned slowly, eyes shadowed. “You.” The lights went off. Darkness swallowed the room. Aria gasped. Something brushed her arm cold, invisible, wrong. The whisper became a scream. She stumbled back, heart pounding. The symbols glowed brighter. The walls trembled. Damian reached for her, pulling her close. “Don’t let it in.” But it was already there. Inside the walls. Inside her thoughts. It whispered her name like a promise. Aria clutched Damian’s shirt, her breath ragged. “What is this thing?” He looked at her, haunted. “It’s the price of power. And it’s been waiting for you.”
