Echoes Beneath the Skin

The rain hadn’t stopped since the entity spoke her mother’s name. Aria stood at the edge of the old greenhouse, its glass panes fogged and fractured. Her mother used to disappear here for hours, claiming it was for the orchids. But now, Aria saw the truth in the way the vines curled unnaturally around the beams, how the soil pulsed faintly beneath her boots. She found the journal buried beneath a false floorboard, wrapped in silk and sealed with wax. Her mother’s handwriting danced across the pages, elegant, deliberate, and haunted. “I called it to protect you. I didn’t know it would want more.” Aria’s throat tightened. The entries spoke of desperation, of rituals performed in secret, of bargains struck in grief. Her mother had summoned the entity after Aria’s fever nearly took her at age five. The price was unclear then. It was not unclear now. “Blood remembers,” the final page read. “And it always collects.” Aria closed the journal and stepped into the storm. Meanwhile, Damian sat cross-legged in the chapel ruins, the sigil on his palm glowing faintly. Father Mikel had warned him: “It’s not a weapon. It’s a mirror.” But Damian had begun to see more. When he focused, the sigil revealed threads of energy that pulsed through the world, connecting pain, memory, and will. He traced one thread and felt Aria’s heartbeat. Another, and he saw the entity watching from the veil. He whispered the incantation again, and the sigil burned hotter. Then he saw it. A memory not his own. Aria’s mother, kneeling in the greenhouse, blood on her hands, whispering to the dark. Damian gasped, and the vision shattered. He knew now: the sigil didn’t just protect, it demanded understanding. And it was showing him the truth Aria would soon face. He ran toward the greenhouse. Aria stood in the doorway, soaked and silent. “I know,” she said before he could speak. “She gave it my name.”
