BANG ! BANG!
The door was banged heavily, causing the residents of the house to awake hastily from their slumber. Daciana awoke her husband, first alerting him of the supposed threat. Unbeknownst to them, Marceline, whose room was closest to the door, had already awoken from her sleep and was advancing to the door in her pj’s and droopy eyes.
“Stop!”. Daciana halted her daughter, whose hands were on the handle of the door. Marceline turned to see her stunned parents, whose eyes were droopy as well. She raised her eyebrows, mouthing ‘What’. Her mother only signalled further for her to step away from the door, which she did though she was still confused.
Marceline stepped to the side and watched her parents walk towards the door.
“GO inside”. Her father harshly directed her. Marceline sighed and walked into her room. She gently closed the door, but not fully, so she could hear the events playing on outside her room.
Daciana and Birdwolf opened the door together and forced a smile as they met face to face with their greatest fear, Omega Jacob.
The young man, who was supposedly in his twenties, was a 6-foot-tall man with white hair long to his waist. His eyes were green as a jade and his lips always held a stern forced smile that contradicted his whole exterior. Always dressed in jeans and polo, he looked like he posed no threat to an onlooker, but the Birdwolves knew better. His glowing eyes and the book he always carried around brought fear to many, especially the Birdwolves.
“You took long enough”. Jacob commented once they opened the door.
“MY apologies Omega Jacob, We hadn’t heard the banging earlier”. Birdwolf said to pacify him.
Jacob paid no heed to his words though and took a glance around the apartment. He raised his eyebrows and smirked slightly. “You seem to have something to hide”. He said, looking straight at Birdwolf, who looked away.
“No we do not-“. Daciana Protested.
“Save it”, Jacob raised his hand, cutting her short, “Where is Marceline?”. Jacob’s smirk grew wider as he spoke.
The Birdwolves heart sank as Jacob called out their daughter’s name. They knew there was every possibility for him to know her name, but the mere thought of him knowing her name personally still brought fear to their eyes,
“You seem shocked to know that I know your daughter’s name”. Jacob noted as he looked at their fear-filled eyes.
“No we aren’t “, Daciana dared to smile despite her thumping chest, “She had to report early to her duties to her Lady this morning, so she is not around”. Daciana lied straight faced.
“Hmm”. Jacob said, looking suspiciously at both people. He smiled and decided not to press on further. “I think you know why I am here”. He flipped a page of the book and ran his eyes to the bottom of the page before reading something.
“Alpha Adolphus, The Alpha in charge of the state of Olrod has given a decree that all girls from the ages of eighteen to twenty-one are required to submit their name tags for the choosing of the tributes to the supreme Alpha. Is that understood?”. Jacob asked, looking up from the book.
Birdwolf swallowed hard before nodding his head, “Yes we do”. He said with a dry throat.
“If so, the name Tag”. Jacob outstretched his hands to them.
Daciana held her chest as she tried to get a grip of herself, “I will go get it”. She said before walking to her room, which she entered. After a while, she stepped out of the room with a wooden tag in her hand. Once she reached her husband’s side, she handed the tag to Jacob, who took it whole heartedly.
“The choosing takes place in three days at the Central Square. All ladies whose name tags have been submitted are expected to be there or else “. Jacob looked at them with an evil grin, “There would be consequences”. He said menancily.
“That would be all”. Jacob said. He looked around one last time before walking away from their house moving on the next house. Birdwolf locked the door before pulling his sobbing wife into his hands.
“I am scared Birdwolf ..... I am so scared”. Daciana sobbed harder as she fell to the ground. Her husband rubbed circles on her back as he tried to pacify her.
Marceline gently closed her door as she fell to her knees as well. Seeing or hearing her mother cry was always sad for her, it was always hard for her, it was harder for her as she shared the same fear her parents both had. It was the annual fear that came with the choosing ceremony. It always took a toll on all the girls in the age range. The previous year was exhausting as well and Marceline could remember the fear she felt, but this time the fear ran deep through her bones, causing a cold chill to spread through her bones.
Every human girl was allowed to feel that fear, it was even expected of them. Alpha LUCIUS was the demon reincarnated. Tales of how girls who had been sent to the cold palace of Belrig either came back as corpses or didn’t come back at all proved all the more the fear that parents and children had for the cold palace. Marceline could not imagine being selected, it was equivalent to being killed and she would rather die in her parents house than be killed and eaten in the cold palace.
“I am scared”. She admitted holding her chest.
“God, if you are up there please help me. I do not want to be selected”. She breathed heavily as she fell her face on her knee cap. She closed her eyes and tried unfailingly to block her ears from her mother’s sobs resonating all over the house.
The fear was sure to stick with her all through the day and that did not mean good for her.
