Chapter 3

785 Words
When I got back to the company, the background reports my lawyer friend dug up was sent to me. The deeper I read, the colder my blood ran. Three years ago, when I first agreed to sponsor Bianca, her family was dirt poor. They couldn't even scrape together enough money to cover her tuition. I still remember our first meeting. She stood in front of me in a faded gray shirt, shifting nervously, too awkward to even relax. When I told her I would pay for her schooling, she broke down crying right then and there, overcome with gratitude. But now? She's dripping head to toe in luxury designer goods and puts on a high-society socialite act every time she steps out. Her little brother even owns a publicly listed company registered under his name, plus countless mansions and fancy cars that I can't even count. My heart sank straight to my stomach. I already had a nasty inkling where this was going. I kept scrolling down, and sure enough, Gareth had started secretly siphoning off assets six full months ago. He abused his position at the company to drain our operating cash flow through a network of dummy companies, moving all the money straight to an overseas bank account registered under Bianca's name. What he left me with was nothing but a gaping hole in our company's finances and that guaranteed contract I was just days away from signing. If I had signed that paper, the company would have imploded. I wouldn't just lose everything and go bankrupt; I'd be stuck holding the bag for tens of millions in debt, and I could even end up behind bars. Meanwhile, he and Bianca had already sorted out their immigration papers. All they had to do was wait for me to take the fall and go to prison, then they'd sail off to a foreign country to live the high life on my money. I gritted my teeth and forced my roaring anger down, then fired off a message to my assistant. Diane: Make absolutely sure the renovation team gets that special device installed before tonight. No exceptions. Diane: Also, notify the legal department. I want every link of the evidence chain ready. We're going to catch them red-handed like fish in a barrel. But before I could make my move, disaster struck one of our key projects. That multi-million core project? Bianca was too busy flirting with Gareth in the break room to pay attention to her work, and she accidentally moved the decimal point one place to the left on the price quote. A project that was supposed to turn a healthy profit suddenly flipped into a massive loss overnight. The total damage came to a whopping $800,000. I slammed the contract down hard on the conference room table, then announced in an icy voice in front of every single senior executive, "Ms. Bianca Moore is hereby terminated effective immediately for gross professional negligence that has caused massive financial losses to the company. We will also pursue full legal liability for the damages!" Bianca stood in the middle of the conference room, her face stark white as she cried out, "Ms. Harrison, I didn’t do it on purpose. I was just so tired…" That’s when Gareth slammed his fist on the table and shot to his feet. "Bianca has pulled endless late nights for this project these past few days! One small mistake is totally normal! Can’t the company just cover the loss? Do you really have to drive her into a corner like this?" As soon as Gareth took a stand, all of Bianca’s close work friends jumped up one after another to back her up. "That’s right, Ms. Harrison. Bianca’s been so swamped with this project that she hasn’t even had time to eat. A tiny mistake is totally understandable." "If you fire someone over one little mistake, that’s just cruel! How are any of us supposed to feel safe working here if that’s how you do things?" "Exactly! This is obviously just jealousy because Vice President Harrison is close to her. Who’d want to work for a petty boss like this anyway?" Staring at this crowd of people, I could only think this was hilarious. So this was where Gareth got his nerve. He really thought riling up the staff would force me to back down? I swept a cold glare around the entire room. "Anyone who doesn’t want to work here can go get their final paycheck from finance right now and leave." I gritted my teeth, then delivered the final blow, "This company belongs to me, not Gareth’s, and it sure as hell is never going to be Bianca’s!"
