Chapter 8. Khalid's POV As I gently laid Megan on the bed, I couldn't help but sigh inwardly. Her beautiful face, which was now pale, depicted pain, I was so pissed with Alexis, but I managed to control myself. “Where was the physician?” I asked myself, as I paced to and fro in the room. The maid I sent to get the Physician hadn’t returned, and I couldn’t help but worry about Megan’s life. I stared deeply into Megan’s face, and breathed sadly. I could only imagine the pain she was going through that moment! Alexis was a very skilled fighter, which was one of the main reasons I made her my Beta. I knew her capability, and that was why I was scared for Megan. The fact she was also an ordinary human added to my worries, as I prayed that she didn’t sustain any injuries. I had never intended to get involved with her, especially with this curse looming over me, but I didn’t understand my feelings anymore. I became confused as to what was happening to me! Not only that, but I have always avoided her because of the fear of my curse….but I was certain that she wouldn’t understand it. She’d feel I hate her, which is definitely not the case. When I saw Alexis dangerously close to taking her life, something stirred within me—a feeling I couldn't quite explain. “What was happening to me?” I couldn’t help but ask no one in particular. I clenched my fists tightly the moment my mind drifted to the fact that Alexis, my Beta, tried to kill Megan and my blood boiled. I stopped pacing around the room and went to Megan’s side of the bed, and knelt beside her. Slowly, I stretched my hands to touch her face when a knock on the door made me jerk, as I stood and arranged myself. “Who’s there?” I asked loudly, even if I had thought it was the physician, “Come in,” I added and the door opened slowly, revealing a maid. I breathed deeply when I saw the maid, and turned to glance at Megan. “Your highness,” She stammered, and I turned to stare at her. “The elders….” She trailed off, and my eyes widened. I had totally forgotten about the elders the moment I saw Megan in that state. “Okay,” I muttered and waved my hand, indicating she could leave. After she had left, I began to wonder why the elders had fixed a meeting without my knowledge. An impromptu meeting! I simply shrugged and went over to where Megan laid, and muttered… “I’ll be right back,” I smiled sadly, even when I was fully aware that she couldn’t hear me. I walked out of the room, heading towards the meeting room, only to see all the elders, seated as they waited patiently for me. They breathed deeply the moment they saw me, but I didn’t care less. I was just confused as to why they fixed an impromptu meeting. “Greetings, Your highness,” They chorused, as soon as I took my seat, and I smiled lightly. “Greetings to you too, my elders,” I said and they bowed their heads. “So to what do I owe this meeting?” I suddenly asked and there was a pin drop silence. Silence! I became scared because I knew they remain silent only when there’s a serious issue. “I ask again, to what do I owe this meeting?” I asked and there were sighs everywhere. I was already pissed, but I managed to control myself. “You all fixed a meeting without my knowledge, and still, none of you wants to talk,” I said angrily. “Your highness, we apologize for fixing an impromptu meeting….but we’ve been bothered and that’s why we didn’t have any other choice than to fix the meeting,” One of the elder said and I creased my brows. I suddenly became curious, as I waited patiently for them to talk, but the remained silent. “No one is talking? Should I cancel the meeting then?” I asked and there was shock written on their faces. “No, your highness,” The same elder said, and I furrowed my brows. “Your highness, we called to discuss the date the human girl would leave….” He said, and I rolled my eyes. I never thought it was related to Megan, but I didn’t say anything as I listened to what the elders said. “We had to discuss this because she must leave!” Another elder said, laying emphasis on the word ‘must’ and I looked amused. The fact he said it with confidence made me chuckle lightly. The meeting became tense from the start, as each elder voiced their concerns. “A human has no place among our kind, and it’s a must you send her back to where she came from,” The elder said sternly, and I looked at him in shock. “So it has reached this level, that you’ll talk to me anyhow,” I asked, and they sighed deeply, shaking their heads in the process. “Your highness—” They were about saying when I raised a hand. “Listen and listen very well, if you know you aren’t going to help solve this problem, don’t add to it,” I spat angrily, my emotions getting the better of me. “Megan is not leaving and that’s final,” I stood and stormed out of the meeting room, with my anger and frustration boiling all over. I really didn’t know why it was hard for them to understand me, knowing fully well that she needed our protection. Returning to my quarters, all I wanted was a moment to collect my thoughts and calm down, but fate had other plans. Before I could even begin to relax, a servant girl appeared at my door, her eyes wide with concern. “Alpha Khalid,” She stammered, clearly distressed. “Something strange is happening to Meghan.” She added. My heart leaped into my throat, and any lingering anger I had felt from the meeting vanished instantly. My concern for Megan's well-being took over, pushing me into action. I didn't know what was happening, or why I felt such a strong connection to this girl, but one thing was clear—I had to help her.
