As Elis drifted in and out of consciousness, he became aware of the woman's presence beside him. She was still holding his hand, and he could feel her warmth and gentle touch. "Who...who are you?" Elis whispered, his voice barely audible. The woman smiled and leaned in close. "My name is Elena," she said, her voice soft and soothing. "I found you on the side of the road. You were in an accident." Elis tried to remember, but his memories were hazy. He vaguely recalled driving, and then...nothing. As he looked into Elena's eyes, he felt a sense of calm wash over him. Her eyes were a deep brown, with flecks of gold that seemed to sparkle in the dim light. "Thank you," Elis whispered, his voice filled with gratitude. Elena smiled and squeezed his hand. "You're welcome," she said. "But I have to ask, what's your name?" Elis's eyes locked onto hers, and he felt a jolt of recognition. "I'm...I'm Elis," he said, his voice barely above a whisper. Elena's expression changed, and she looked at him with a mixture of surprise and concern. "Elis?" she repeated. "What's your last name?" Elis hesitated, unsure of how much to reveal. But something about Elena's kind eyes put him at ease. "My last name is Smith," he said. Elena's eyes widened, and she pulled her hand away from his. "Smith?" she repeated, her voice laced with a mixture of shock and fear. Elis felt a surge of confusion and alarm. What was wrong? Why was Elena reacting like this? "What's wrong?" Elis asked, trying to sit up. Elena's eyes darted around the room, as if she was searching for an escape. "I...I have to go," she said, her voice trembling. Elis reached out and grabbed her arm, holding her in place. "No, please don't go," he said, his voice filled with desperation. "I need your help. I don't remember what happened, and I'm scared." Elena looked at him, and for a moment, Elis saw a glimmer of uncertainty in her eyes. Then, she seemed to make a decision. "Okay, I'll stay," she said, her voice firm. "But you have to promise me one thing." "What's that?" Elis asked, his eyes locked onto hers. "You have to promise me you won't try to leave," Elena said, her voice serious. "You're not well enough, and I don't want you to hurt yourself." Elis nodded, feeling a sense of relief wash over him. "I promise," he said. Elena smiled and squeezed his hand. "Good," she said. "Now, let me get you some water." As Elena got up to get him some water, Elis couldn't shake off the feeling that something was off. Why had Elena reacted like that when he told her his last name was Smith? He tried to push the thought aside and focus on his surroundings. He was in a hospital room, and Elena was taking care of him. That was all that mattered. But as he looked around the room, he noticed something that made his heart skip a beat. On the bedside table, there was a newspaper with a headline that read: "Smith Family Embroiled in Scandal." Elis's eyes widened as he read the article. What was going on? And why did Elena seem so scared when he told her his last name? As he pondered these questions, Elena returned with a glass of water and a look of concern on her face. "Hey, are you okay?" she asked, setting the glass down on the bedside table. Elis nodded, his eyes still fixed on the newspaper. "Yeah, I'm fine," he said. "But I need to know what's going on. Why did you react like that when I told you my last name?" Elena's expression changed, and she looked at him with a mixture of fear and determination. "Elis, I need to tell you something," she said. "But you have to promise me you won't get angry." Elis's heart was racing as he nodded. "I promise," he said. Elena took a deep breath and began to speak. "Elis, your family...they're not very well-liked in this town. There are a lot of people who don't trust them, and some who even fear them." Elis's eyes widened in shock. What was she talking about? His family was a respected one, with a long history of business and philanthropy. "What do you mean?" Elis asked, his voice shaking with anger. Elena hesitated, as if unsure of how to proceed. "I'll tell you everything," she said. "But first, you need to get better. Can you do that for me?" Elis nodded, feeling a sense of trepidation. What was he getting himself into? As Elena helped him drink the water, Elis couldn't shake off the feeling that his life was about to change forever. The sun was setting outside, casting a golden glow over the hospital room. Elis felt a sense of unease as he looked at Elena, who was watching him with a mixture of concern and fear. "What's going on, Elena?" Elis asked, his voice firm. "What's happening in this town?" Elena took a deep breath and began to speak. "It's complicated," she said. "But I'll try to explain. You see, your family has been involved in some... unsavory business dealings. Some people think they're corrupt, and that they're using their power and influence to get away with it." Elis's eyes widened in shock. He couldn't believe what he was hearing. His family was a respected one, with a long history of philanthropy and community service. "That's not true," Elis said, his voice shaking with anger. "My family would never do anything like that." Elena looked at him, her eyes filled with a mixture of sadness and regret. "I'm afraid it's true, Elis," she said. "And it's not just rumors. There are people in this town who have been hurt by your family's actions." Elis felt like he'd been punched in the gut. He couldn't believe what he was hearing. His family, corrupt? It was unthinkable. As the night wore on, Elis struggled to come to terms with what Elena was telling him. He couldn't shake off the feeling that his whole life had been a lie. And then, just as he was starting to process everything, Elena's phone rang. She looked at the screen and her expression changed. "I have to go," she said, her voice firm. "But I'll be back. And I'll tell you everything." Elis nodded, feeling a sense of frustration and confusion. What was going on? And why was Elena leaving him now? As Elena walked out of the room, Elis felt a sense of unease. He was alone, and he had no idea what was happening. But he was determined to find out. With a newfound sense of sense of purpose, Elis threw off the covers and swung his legs over the side of the bed. He was going to get to the bottom of this, no matter what it took. And as he stood up, he felt a sense of determination wash over him. He was going to uncover the truth, and he was going to make sure that justice was served. The clock on the wall read 10:45 PM. Elis had a feeling that his life was about to change forever. As he waited for Elena to return, Elis couldn't shake off the feeling that he was in grave danger. He looked around the room, but everything seemed normal. But then, he heard a faint noise coming from outside the room. It sounded like footsteps, light and cautious. Elis's heart skipped a beat as he realized that someone was outside his room. And they were trying to be quiet. He felt a surge of adrenaline as he realized that he was in danger. And then, just as he was about to call out for help, the door creaked open... (To be continued...)
