Elis's heart was racing as he listened to the faint noise coming from outside the apartment. The sound was barely noticeable at first, almost like someone moving carefully through the hallway. But the longer he listened, the more certain he became that they were not alone. He looked at Sophia and Rachel. Both women had noticed it too. The concern on their faces told Elis that he wasn't imagining things. "What is it?" Sophia whispered. Elis shook his head slowly. "I don't know, but I think we should be careful." Rachel moved closer to the window and looked through the curtains. She barely moved them, just enough to see outside. "Do you see anything?" Elis asked quietly. Rachel shook her head. "Nothing." Sophia looked toward the apartment door. "Then what made that sound?" Nobody answered. The three of them stood silently, listening. The noise stopped. An eerie silence settled over the apartment. Elis could hear his own breathing. He looked at the others, waiting for someone to say something, but nobody did. The silence felt different from before. It wasn't peaceful. It felt like something was waiting just beyond the door. Then the lights flickered. Once. Twice. The room went completely dark. Rachel gasped. "What happened?" Elis whispered. Sophia immediately reached for her phone, but before she could turn on the flashlight, a sound came from the hallway. Footsteps. Heavy. Slow. Deliberate. Elis's stomach tightened. "They're here," he whispered. Sophia grabbed his arm. "What do we do?" Elis looked toward the door. He could hear more footsteps now. There wasn't just one person outside. "There are several of them," Rachel whispered. Before Elis could respond, the apartment door burst open. Several shadowy figures rushed into the room. Everything happened at once. Sophia reacted first. She moved quickly, pushing one of the attackers away before he could get closer. Rachel moved in the opposite direction, blocking another attacker and forcing him backward. Elis grabbed a nearby chair and held it in front of himself. One of the figures rushed toward him. Elis swung the chair, forcing the attacker to step back. "Elis!" Sophia shouted. He turned just in time to avoid another attacker coming from his side. The apartment erupted into chaos. Furniture was knocked aside as everyone struggled for space. The attackers had clearly come prepared, and there were more of them than Elis had expected. Sophia fought with determination, using quick movements to keep the attackers away from Rachel. Rachel did the same, moving between them and the doorway whenever someone tried to enter. Elis tried to help, but he knew he wasn't as skilled as either woman. He pushed one attacker away and stepped backward. Another figure moved toward him. Elis raised the chair again. The attacker grabbed it. For a moment, neither of them moved. Then Elis pulled hard, causing the chair to slip from the attacker's grip. Elis stumbled backward and nearly fell. He caught himself against the wall. "Get away from him!" Sophia shouted. She rushed forward and forced the attacker back. "Thanks," Elis said breathlessly. "Don't thank me yet!" Sophia replied. "Just stay behind us!" More footsteps sounded from the hallway. Rachel's eyes widened. "There are more coming." Elis looked toward the doorway. She was right. Another group rushed into the apartment. Elis's heart sank. "We're outnumbered," he said. Sophia didn't answer. She was already moving. The fight continued. Elis tried to stay close to Sophia and Rachel, but the attackers kept separating them. Every time he managed to move toward one of them, another person blocked his path. He ducked as someone moved toward him and quickly stepped aside. Then he felt a sharp pain in his side. Elis stumbled backward. He placed a hand against his side and looked at the attacker. "I'm okay," he said, though his voice was strained. Sophia looked at him. "Elis!" "I'm fine!" Rachel moved between Elis and the attacker. "Stay back!" Elis nodded. The attackers continued advancing. For a moment, Elis thought they were going to be overwhelmed. Then a loud sound shattered the room. The attackers suddenly stopped. A figure stood in the doorway. She was holding a weapon and looking directly at the remaining attackers. "Get down!" she shouted. Elis immediately dropped low. Sophia and Rachel moved toward the corner. The woman stepped forward and ordered the attackers to stop. Within moments, the remaining attackers scattered, realizing that they had lost the advantage. The apartment became quiet again. Elis slowly raised his head. He recognized the woman. It was Alex. She was dressed in a black tactical suit, and her expression was serious. She looked around the room before lowering the weapon. "Everyone okay?" she asked. Elis nodded, still trying to catch his breath. "Yeah," he said. "Thanks to you." Alex gave him a small smile. "Anytime." Sophia looked at Alex with disbelief. "How did you know we were here?" Alex glanced toward the doorway. "I have my ways." Rachel frowned. "That's not an answer." Alex smiled slightly. "Let's just say I have a few friends on the inside." Elis raised an eyebrow. "Friends on the inside?" Alex nodded. "People who know what the organization is doing. People who have decided they've had enough." Sophia's expression changed. "You mean you're part of a larger group?" "Yes." Alex walked farther into the apartment and looked around. "We've been working quietly for a long time. We've been gathering information, tracking their movements, and trying to understand how far their influence reaches." Elis stared at her. "Why didn't you tell us about this before?" "Because I didn't know if I could trust you." Elis frowned. "Trust me?" Alex looked at him seriously. "You are a Smith, Elis. Whether you like it or not, that name means something to a lot of people." Elis looked away. He was tired of hearing about his family. Everywhere he went, people seemed to know something about the Smiths that he didn't. "What exactly did my family do?" he asked. Alex didn't answer immediately. Sophia stepped forward. "Alex, we need to know." Alex sighed. "You're going to learn everything eventually. But right now, we have a bigger problem." Rachel looked toward the damaged doorway. "The attackers?" "Yes," Alex said. "That wasn't a random attack." Elis's expression hardened. "They came for us." Alex nodded. "More specifically, they came for you." Elis felt a chill run through him. "Why?" "Because they know you're getting closer to the truth." The words stayed in Elis's mind. He remembered everything that had happened since the accident. The hospital. Marcus. Elena. Sophia. The safe house. The organization. Every answer seemed to lead to another question. "What truth?" Elis asked. Alex looked at him. "The truth about what happened to your family." Elis stared at her. "And you know?" "I know some of it." "Then tell me." Alex shook her head. "Not here." Sophia looked toward the hallway. "She's right. We need to leave." Rachel nodded. "We can't stay here." Alex turned toward the doorway. "Exactly." Elis followed them, but before they could leave, he stopped. "Wait." Everyone looked at him. Elis glanced around the apartment. "How did they find us?" Nobody answered. He looked at Sophia. "You said this place was safe." Sophia's expression became uneasy. "It was." "Then how did they find us?" Rachel looked toward the broken door. "Someone may have given away our location." Elis's eyes narrowed. "You mean someone betrayed us?" Alex looked at him. "That's what we need to find out." The realization made Elis uneasy. If someone had betrayed them, then they couldn't know who to trust. Sophia looked at Alex. "Are you saying there could be someone inside our group working for the organization?" Alex nodded. "That's exactly what I'm saying." The room fell silent again. Elis felt a new kind of fear. They had been worried about the people outside. Now they had to worry about the people standing beside them. Alex moved toward the door. "We need to go. Now." They followed her. As Elis stepped into the hallway, he noticed something strange. A low humming sound. He stopped. "What's that?" Sophia looked around. "What?" "The sound." Rachel listened. At first, she heard nothing. Then the humming became louder. It seemed to come from somewhere deeper inside the building. Alex's expression changed immediately. "Everyone stop." They froze. The humming continued. Low. Steady. Growing louder. Elis looked at Alex. "What is it?" "I don't know." Sophia looked toward the end of the hallway. "Then we should get out of here." Alex nodded. "Agreed." They began moving toward the exit. The humming grew louder. Elis's heart started racing again. Something wasn't right. He looked behind them. Nothing. He looked ahead. The hallway was empty. Then they reached the entrance. Elis stopped. Someone was standing there. A woman. She was tall and imposing, dressed in dark clothing. She stood completely still, watching them. Her expression was cold and calculating. Nobody spoke. The woman looked directly at Elis. Then she smiled. "Welcome, Elis." Elis's heart skipped. "I've been waiting for you." Sophia stepped closer to Elis. "Who are you?" The woman ignored her. Her eyes remained fixed on Elis. "You've caused quite a lot of trouble." Elis stared at her. "Do I know you?" The woman smiled. "Not yet." Alex stepped forward. "Stay where you are." The woman looked at Alex. "Alex." Alex's expression changed. "You know me?" "Oh, I know much more than you think." Rachel looked between them. "What does she want?" The woman finally looked at Rachel. "That's simple." She turned her attention back to Elis. "I want him." Elis felt his heart pounding. Sophia moved slightly in front of him. "You're not taking him." The woman smiled. "We'll see about that." Alex raised her weapon. "Nobody moves." The woman didn't appear frightened. Instead, she smiled again. "You still don't understand." Alex narrowed her eyes. "Understand what?" The woman looked at Elis. "The organization isn't afraid of you." Elis's expression hardened. "Then why are you here?" The woman took a slow step forward. "Because you're getting close to something your family buried a long time ago." Elis felt a cold sensation run through him. "What did they bury?" The woman smiled. "That is the question, isn't it?" She took another step. Elis looked at Sophia, Rachel, and Alex. They were all watching the woman carefully. For the first time, Elis realized that whatever secret his family had hidden was bigger than he had imagined. He had spent days trying to discover the truth. Now the truth seemed to be coming directly toward him. The woman stopped. "Welcome, Elis Smith." Her voice was calm. Almost too calm. "I've been waiting for you." Elis took a breath and stood his ground. "Then let's find out what you've been waiting for." The woman's smile widened. "Oh, I think you will." She paused. "I think you will." And with those words, the hallway fell silent. To be continued...
