Chapter 4: The Escape

870 Words
As Elis and Elena made their way out of the hospital, they couldn't shake off the feeling that they were being watched. Elis kept looking over his shoulder, expecting to see Marcus or someone else lurking in the shadows. The hospital's corridors seemed to stretch on forever, with fluorescent lights flickering above them like a stuttering heartbeat. The air was thick with the smell of disinfectant and the hum of machinery. "Come on, Elis," Elena said, tugging on his arm. "We need to get out of here." Elis nodded, and they quickened their pace. They moved swiftly through the corridors, their footsteps echoing off the walls. As they turned a corner, Elis caught sight of a security guard standing at attention. He was a big man with a thick beard and a stern expression. "Excuse me," Elis said, approaching the guard. "We're trying to get out of here. Can you tell us where the exit is?" The guard looked at them suspiciously, his eyes narrowing. "What's going on?" he asked. Elena smiled and took Elis's arm. "We're just trying to get some fresh air," she said. "The patient's family is waiting for us outside." The guard looked uncertain, but he nodded. "Okay, I can let you out. But you need to sign out first." Elis hesitated, unsure of what to do. He didn't want to leave a trail of breadcrumbs for Marcus or whoever else might be following them. "Can we just go?" Elis asked, looking at Elena. Elena nodded, and they quickly made their way to the exit. The guard didn't bother to stop them, and they slipped out into the cool night air. As they emerged from the hospital, Elis felt a sense of relief wash over him. They were finally free. But as they walked away from the hospital, Elis couldn't shake off the feeling that they were being followed. He kept looking over his shoulder, expecting to see Marcus or someone else lurking in the shadows. The city streets were empty and quiet, with only a few stragglers out and about. The streetlights cast long shadows across the pavement, making Elis feel like they were walking through a tunnel. Suddenly, Elena grabbed his arm and pulled him into a narrow alleyway. "Quickly," she said. "We need to get out of sight." Elis didn't hesitate. He followed Elena into the alleyway, and they crouched down behind a dumpster. "What is it?" Elis whispered, his heart racing. Elena peered around the corner, her eyes scanning the street. "I think we're being followed," she said. "There's a black car following us." Elis's eyes widened as he saw the car in question. It was a sleek, black vehicle with tinted windows. "Get down," Elis whispered, pulling Elena back into the shadows. As they watched, the car pulled up to the curb, and Marcus got out. He looked around, his eyes scanning the street. Elis held his breath, hoping that they wouldn't be discovered. But Marcus seemed to sense that they were nearby. He looked directly at the alleyway, and Elis could have sworn that he saw a glimmer of recognition in his eyes. Marcus started to walk towards them, his movements fluid and confident. "We need to get out of here," Elis whispered, grabbing Elena's arm. They quickly made their way through the alleys, dodging trash cans and leaping over puddles. The streets were narrow and winding, with tall buildings looming above them. As they ran, Elis could hear Marcus behind them. He was getting closer and closer. Suddenly, Elena grabbed Elis's arm and pulled him into a small doorway. "In here," she said. Elis didn't hesitate. He followed Elena into the doorway, and they stood there, panting and listening. Marcus ran past the doorway, his footsteps echoing off the walls. Elis let out a sigh of relief. They had managed to evade Marcus. But as they stood there, catching their breath, Elis heard a faint noise coming from inside the doorway. It sounded like footsteps. And then, a figure emerged from the shadows. Elis's eyes widened as he saw a woman standing in front of them. She was dressed in a black leather jacket, and her hair was styled in a pixie cut. "Who are you?" Elis asked, his voice barely above a whisper. The woman smiled, and her eyes seemed to gleam with amusement. "My name is Sophia," she said. "And I'm here to help you." Elis's eyes narrowed. He didn't know what to make of Sophia. But as he looked at Elena, he saw a glimmer of recognition in her eyes. "Do you know her?" Elis asked, his voice low. Elena nodded. "I think I do," she said. "Sophia is an old friend of mine." Elis's eyes widened. "What do you mean?" Sophia smiled again, and this time, Elis saw a hint of mischief in her eyes. "I think it's time we got out of here," Sophia said. "Don't you?" As Sophia led them deeper into the building, Elis couldn't shake off the feeling that they were walking into a trap. But he had no choice. They had to trust Sophia. And so, they followed her into the unknown, the darkness swallowing them whole. (To be continued...)
