Chapter Ten—No More Games

1259 Words
Amara woke up the next morning with a strange feeling in her chest. She knew something was going to happen. She couldn’t explain why, but after everything that had happened with Chloe, she felt like the situation had reached its final stage. For the past few days, Chloe had tried everything. The little comments. The rumours. The messages. The pictures. The questions that were designed to make Amara doubt Ethan. But none of it had changed what Ethan felt for her. If anything, it had made Amara realize how much she trusted him. She got ready for school and decided that whatever happened that day, she wasn’t going to be afraid. When she arrived, Ethan was already waiting for her. He smiled the moment he saw her. Amara walked toward him, and Ethan immediately noticed something different about her. She looked calmer. He asked if she was okay. Amara smiled and told him she was. She didn’t want to spend another morning talking about Chloe. Instead, she took his hand and started walking with him. For the first time in days, neither of them mentioned her. They talked about school, their weekend plans, and a movie they both wanted to watch. Amara laughed at something Ethan said. Ethan teased her about how easily she laughed at his jokes. For a while, it felt like the old days. Just them. No rumours. No confusion. No one else. But Chloe had not forgotten what happened the day before. She had spent the entire night thinking about Amara’s words. She didn’t want to accept that Ethan had chosen someone else. She had convinced herself that if she tried hard enough, she could change his mind. But now she was beginning to understand that she couldn’t force someone to feel something they didn’t. Still, she had one last thing she wanted to do. During lunch, Chloe approached Ethan. Amara was nearby, talking with her friends. Chloe asked Ethan if they could speak privately. Ethan hesitated. He looked toward Amara before answering. He told Chloe that there was nothing they needed to discuss privately. If she had something to say, she could say it there. Chloe looked embarrassed. She glanced at Amara. Then she admitted that she had been trying to get between them. The words came out quietly. Amara’s friends became silent. Ethan looked disappointed. Chloe explained that she liked Ethan and hated seeing him with Amara. She said she had thought that if she made Amara doubt him, maybe they would eventually have problems. Amara listened without interrupting. She expected to feel angry. Instead, she felt tired. She had spent so much time worrying about Chloe that she had almost forgotten to enjoy her relationship with Ethan. Amara told Chloe that she understood that she had feelings, but that didn’t give her the right to interfere with their relationship. Chloe looked down. For once, she had nothing clever to say. Ethan then made it clear that his feelings weren’t going to change. He told Chloe that he respected her as a person, but he didn’t have romantic feelings for her. He loved Amara. That was the truth. Chloe nodded slowly. She apologized. It wasn’t a dramatic apology. There were no tears or huge speeches. It was simply an acknowledgment that she had gone too far. Amara accepted the apology. She didn’t become Chloe’s best friend. She didn’t suddenly forget everything that had happened. But she decided she wasn’t going to carry the anger around anymore. Chloe walked away. Amara watched her go. Then she turned toward Ethan. He looked at her and asked if she was okay. Amara nodded. She told him she was. But there was something she wanted to say. She admitted that there had been moments when Chloe’s actions made her question things. Ethan listened. Amara explained that she hated feeling like she had to wonder whether someone else was trying to take him away from her. Ethan told her she never had to compete for his love. He said he had chosen her because he wanted her, not because Chloe wasn’t available. Those words meant more to Amara than he probably realized. She smiled. Then she apologized for allowing the rumours to get into her head. Ethan told her she didn’t have to apologize for being scared. He said trust wasn’t about never having doubts. Sometimes, it was about choosing to communicate instead of allowing those doubts to grow. Amara hugged him. For a moment, she forgot that anyone else was around. She just felt safe. The Chloe situation was finally over. Later that afternoon, Amara and Ethan sat together outside after their classes. They talked about how strange the past few weeks had been. Amara laughed when she remembered some of the ridiculous situations Chloe had created. Ethan shook his head, saying he couldn’t believe they had spent so much time worrying about it. Amara told him that at least they had learned something. Ethan asked what. She said she had learned that she loved him more than she realized. Ethan smiled. He told her that he already knew. Amara rolled her eyes and told him not to become too confident. They both laughed. The sun was beginning to set, and the school was slowly becoming quieter. Amara rested her head against Ethan’s shoulder. She felt peaceful. For the first time since Chloe had entered their story, there was no uncertainty hanging over them. No secret messages. No rumours. No pictures. No wondering what someone else was planning. Just Amara and Ethan. And that was exactly how she wanted it. As they walked toward the school gate, Ethan asked Amara what she wanted their next few weeks to look like. Amara thought about it. She wanted normal days. She wanted more memories. She wanted to laugh with him, study with him, argue over silly things, make up, and experience everything school had to offer together. She didn’t know what the future would bring. Neither of them did. But she didn’t need to know everything. For now, Ethan was beside her. And she was beside him. That was enough. They reached the gate. Ethan stopped and looked at her. He told her that no matter how many people tried to create problems between them, they should always talk to each other first. Amara promised. She squeezed his hand. Then they walked away together. Neither of them noticed Chloe standing far behind them. She watched them for a few seconds before turning away. This time, there was no plan. No scheme. No jealousy. She had finally accepted that Ethan wasn’t hers to win. Amara and Ethan had survived the situation without losing each other. And their relationship was stronger because of it. But their story was far from over. There would be new school terms. New memories. New challenges. There would be moments that would make them laugh until their stomachs hurt and moments that would test everything they believed about each other. One day, Ethan would have to make decisions about his future. One day, Amara would have to face changes she wasn’t prepared for. And one day, the two of them would discover that loving someone wasn’t always about keeping them close. Sometimes, it was about learning how to hold on when life started pulling them in different directions. But that was a story for another time. For now, Amara looked at Ethan and smiled. He smiled back. And together, they walked into whatever came next. The chapter with Chloe was over. Their story was only beginning.
