The next few days were some of the happiest Amara had experienced in a long time.
Being with Ethan felt easy.
There was no pressure to pretend, no need to wonder where she stood with him, and no reason to hide the smile that appeared whenever she saw him walking toward her. They were still learning more about each other, but every day seemed to bring them closer.
Amara had started looking forward to school more than she ever had before.
She loved the little moments they shared between classes. Sometimes they would walk together without saying much, and somehow the silence never felt awkward. Other times, they would spend their breaks laughing about the smallest things.
It felt perfect.
Maybe too perfect.
Because while Amara was enjoying every moment, Chloe was watching.
She hadn’t forgotten the decision she made at the end of the previous week. She wanted Ethan, and she had convinced herself that Amara was the only thing standing in her way.
But Chloe knew she couldn’t simply walk up to Ethan and tell him that she wanted him.
That would be too obvious.
She needed to be patient.
She needed to make Ethan comfortable around her first.
So she started small.
Whenever Ethan was around, Chloe found reasons to be nearby. If he was talking with a group of students, she would casually join them. If he needed something for a school activity, she was suddenly available to help.
At first, Ethan didn’t think much of it.
He was naturally friendly, so he treated Chloe the same way he treated everyone else.
That was exactly what Chloe wanted.
She wanted him to see her as harmless.
Amara noticed the change eventually.
The first time she saw Chloe laughing with Ethan, she didn’t think anything of it. She trusted Ethan, and she wasn’t going to become jealous over every girl who spoke to him.
But then it happened again.
And again.
Chloe seemed to be everywhere Ethan was.
One afternoon, Ethan mentioned that he had to stay behind after class to help with a school activity. Amara had plans to meet him afterward, so she waited patiently.
When she eventually walked toward the classroom, she saw Chloe standing beside Ethan.
They were looking over some papers together.
Amara slowed down.
She watched for a moment before continuing toward them.
Ethan noticed her almost immediately and smiled.
Amara smiled back, but something about the scene had made her uncomfortable.
Chloe noticed it too.
She gave Amara a friendly smile and explained that she was only helping Ethan with the school activity.
There was nothing wrong with that.
At least, that’s what Amara told herself.
She tried not to think about it.
Ethan joined her shortly afterward, completely unaware that anything was bothering her.
They walked toward the cafeteria together, and Amara forced herself to relax.
She didn’t want to be the girlfriend who questioned every little thing.
She trusted him.
She had to remember that.
The following morning, Chloe became even bolder.
She approached Ethan before class and handed him something he had apparently forgotten the previous day. It was a small notebook he had left behind during the school activity.
Ethan thanked her.
Amara happened to be walking past at that exact moment.
She saw Chloe standing close to him.
Again, it shouldn’t have bothered her.
But it did.
She kept walking.
Ethan noticed her a few seconds later and hurried after her.
Amara acted normal.
She smiled, responded to him, and continued walking beside him.
But Ethan could tell something was different.
He asked if she was okay, and she quickly assured him that everything was fine.
She didn’t want to start an argument over something that might mean absolutely nothing.
Meanwhile, Chloe watched them from behind.
A small smile appeared on her face.
Her plan was working.
She didn’t need to make Amara hate Ethan.
She only needed to make her question things.
And once doubt entered a relationship, everything could change.
Over the next few days, Chloe continued.
Sometimes she would ask Ethan for help with something. Other times, she would bring up memories from before Amara and Ethan became close, making it seem like she and Ethan had always known each other.
None of it was serious enough for Amara to confront her.
That was the clever part.
Chloe wasn’t doing anything openly wrong.
She was simply making herself present.
Still, Amara began feeling uncomfortable.
She started noticing things she hadn’t noticed before.
The way Chloe looked at Ethan.
The way Chloe seemed to know exactly when he would be around.
The way she always managed to appear whenever Amara wasn’t there.
Amara wondered if she was imagining it.
Maybe she was being too sensitive.
Maybe Chloe was genuinely just being friendly.
She didn’t know.
And that uncertainty began bothering her.
One afternoon, Amara sat alone for a few minutes after class, thinking about everything.
She hated the feeling.
She had promised herself she wouldn’t allow insecurity to ruin something that made her happy.
Ethan hadn’t given her a reason not to trust him.
So why was she allowing someone else’s actions to make her feel this way?
She took a deep breath and decided to stop thinking about it.
For the rest of the day, she tried to act normal.
And for a while, it worked.
Until she saw something that made her stop completely.
It was after school.
Most students had already started leaving, and the hallway was much quieter than usual.
Amara had been looking for Ethan because they were supposed to meet before going home.
She turned the corner and suddenly saw him.
Ethan was standing near one of the classrooms.
Chloe was with him.
Amara stopped.
She couldn’t hear what they were saying from where she stood.
Chloe was holding something in her hands while Ethan looked at her.
There was nothing obviously wrong about the situation.
But after everything that had happened over the past few days, Amara couldn’t ignore the feeling in her chest.
Why was Chloe always with him?
Why did she keep finding ways to get close to him?
And why did it suddenly feel like Chloe was doing it intentionally?
Amara stayed where she was.
She didn’t want them to see her.
She wanted to hear what they were talking about.
But before she could move any closer, Chloe looked up.
Their eyes met.
For a second, everything went silent.
Amara expected Chloe to look surprised.
Instead, Chloe smiled.
It wasn’t the friendly smile she had been giving everyone all week.
There was something different about it.
Something almost knowing.
Amara’s heart dropped.
Ethan still hadn’t noticed her.
Chloe continued looking directly at Amara, as though she had been waiting for this exact moment.
Then Chloe slowly turned back toward Ethan.
Amara suddenly understood something she hadn’t wanted to believe.
Maybe none of this was a coincidence.
Maybe Chloe had been getting closer to Ethan on purpose.
She took a small step backward.
Her mind was racing.
She didn’t know what Chloe wanted.
She didn’t know what had been happening when she wasn’t around.
And most importantly, she didn’t know whether Ethan had noticed what Chloe was doing.
Amara turned and walked away before either of them could call her name.
She didn’t run.
She didn’t cry.
She simply walked, trying to make sense of everything happening in her head.
Behind her, Chloe watched her leave.
Her plan had officially begun.
And this time, Amara knew it.
