The Awakening of a Soul Reaper

Chapter 26. A slow start

Clarise slides her feet slowly from her bed, it’s Sunday and she decides she is not in the mood for training or anything else, she phones Willow and arrange with her to go for a milkshake at the diner where they usually hang out.  On her way to the diner, she conjures Ignus, she asks him about the Vanus and what would happen if she gets possessed.

He explains to her “a human body can only have one soul in them two for a short while but then the body starts to tear down because of all of the energy.  A reapers body get used to having the energy of two souls that flows through it, but this also makes it very hard for a Vanus to possess a reaper, unless that Vanus is very powerful.  But in the case where a Vanus is able to possess a reaper it would surely be catastrophic, it can cause a Vanus to become so powerful that it can tear down the veil, and even maybe open up a portal to the realm of rest and the dark planes.”

“If there is a Vanus that is that powerful, why didn’t he try to poses me when I just got the powers?”

“Well, your body needs to get strong, so it can handle the power, else it will rip that body apart especially if it wants to use power to open a portal to the other realms”

“So, I really have a big problem.  If I don’t train then I won’t be able to fight off Vanus, if I do train and I get strong then I can be possess that leads to an apocalypse.”

At the diner she finds willow feasting away on a plate of potato chips, Clarise starts to laugh when she sees her.  “If a girl is hungry then she is hungry” Willow mutters between chewing and sliding a potato chip between two heaps of mustard and ketchup in her plate.

After the two settled down Clarise looks around the diner is basically empty, she starts to tell Willow what happened and what her grandparents told her, she also tells her what Ignus told her.

“So, what are you going to do?” she asks Clarise.

“Well, I think the clever thing to do is to ask Tyler for his help, if it’s possible that we can team up and destroy as many of the smaller Vanus then the better.”

The two of them sits and strategies for a while then Willows phone rings, its James he invites the both of them to come for a drive with him. 

He picks the two girls up and drives over to park.  As they walk through the park Willow explains Clarise’s conundrum.  At the duck pond Clarise feels a shiver going down her spine, she looks over in the middle of the pond there is a small island.  On the side of island, she sees the figure of a ghost, she thought that she would be used to the sight but it still upsets her.

James and Willow stop turns around and look at Clarise, “what’s wrong?” they ask her.   With a sigh she tells them what she sees.  “So how are you going to get there?” they ask her.  She looks around and can see that there is quite a few people standing around if she jumps, they will clearly see her, but if she is cloaked, she will be able to go across without anyone seeing anything.

She asks them to wait there for her, she runs to the public toilets.  When she is sure that she is alone she conjures her cloak.  She races towards the pond and with one leap she crosses the water and lands on the island.  In the veil the water around her looks pitch-black, it’s the first time she sees a ghost in the veil, the core of it shines bright like a star.  As she gets closer, she can see it’s a child’s ghost, his hair is wet and he is shivering.  She goes and sits beside him.  “How are you?” she asks him.  “You-you can see me?  Please don’t hurt me!” he begs her.

“Don’t worry I won’t hurt you, why don’t you come out of the water and come and sit here with me, you will be much warmer if you do.” She tries to lure him closer to her.  “I’m stuck!” he replies.

Clarise moves forward when she touches the water it starts to split in front of her creating a wall around her, she can see a tree branch around his leg, she moves closer and with one swing of her scythe she breaks the branch, releasing his leg.

With his leg free the boy looks much calmer, even the pulse of his core is slower.  She goes down beside him “you have been struggling for a while now, why don’t you go and rest now?” she says to him.

He looks at her with a big smile, “yes I would like that” he replies.

She pushes her hand in, his body and shoots his core into a rift, the bright light disappearing in an instant.

From where she was standing, she jumps up and shoots herself into the air.

The veil is truly and dark place she says as she lands on the other side of pond.  She runs towards the public toilets where she changes but she feels a presence.  When she looks around, she sees the same Vanus that she fought in gym, dashing towards her, he attempts to hit her with his one hand but she is too fast for him as she jumps backwards.  He starts to laugh at her “well, well what do we have here” he licks his lips.

“Do you remember me?” he asks her.

“Yea I remember you; you are the one who’s arms I have cut off and the one that got scolded by the other big Vanus” she replies.  Without hesitation she propels herself forward and with one dash she slices and cut a big dash in his side.

“Well, that wasn’t very nice of you!” he says the grin disappearing from his face.

She takes a stance, concentrates and jumps up and slices through the air releasing a beam of essence that rips open the earth as it travels.  It hits him and slices him from the bottom to his mid.

“Wow that is new trick” he says trying to retreat bus she doesn’t allow him to.  She jumps and launches herself right in front of him.  With the tip of her scythe, she slices through him cracking open his core.  His body turning to black mist that disappears in front of her.

With a big satisfaction she makes her way to the toilets, removing her cloak.

When she joins Willow and James the two of them wants to know what happened and why she looks so happy does.  Well, a soul reaper has awakened she says to them slamming her fist into her other palm.  The both of them wants to know what that means.

She explains to them the ghost was a small boy that drowned and that she managed to calm him and send him off there where he was supposed to be, and that he faced off against a Vanus even though it not a big one, she still feels proud for beating and destroying him.

What a productive Sunday it has been, but she feels tired it really took a lot out of her, she realizes that if the fight maybe got out of hand and if it took longer that she would have been exhausted in battle and that is not good.  She needs to get stronger, a lot stronger.

She feels chuffed with herself and enjoys the rest of the Sunday with her friends, she wishes Tyler were there.  Since everything that happened, she feels like the bond that she and Tyler had is gone, but she hopes that training with him will make it better again.

She takes out her phone and sends him a message I’m thinking of you.  A couple of minutes later a message return that gives her hope I can’t wait for us to train together.

The go and sit under a tree in the shade, she looks over at Willow and James, it’s clear as day that the two of them are into each other.  Who could have thought the athletic girl would go for a nerdy boy like James, she starts to laugh.  “And what are you giggling about?” asks Willow sitting with her back against the tree stump.  “Well for starters I haven’t seen you eating and the second thing I will tell you later…” she gives a smile.  Later James runs off to go and buy them each a soda, Clarise moves closer to Willow.  “So, you and James?” she says with a big grin on her face.  “What no, no” is the reply she gets back.  “You can try and hide it but I can see it in your eyes and also when he looks at you, there is fire burning between you two.”

Willow puts her back against the tree and looks up into the sky, “I do feel something for him, but …” she bites down her lips “I don’t want to jinx it”.

“Yea I messed real up with Tyler, it feels like this whole power thing has created a rift between us, but hopefully this week we can start our training together, and hopefully that will bring us back together.”

The two girls sit there and wait for James to return.

After they have finished their sodas, James drives them home.

The following day, Clarise is up and about and when she enters the kitchen, she sees her aunt busy going through a couple of recopy books.  “What you doing?” she asks with her eyes stretched wide.

“Well, there is a certain missy, who’s having a birthday this week” her aunt replies.

“You know what I totally forgot you most probably want to have a party or gathering or something?” her aunt asks her, taking out another book and placing it on the table.  “We can maybe have a look at the weekend, say Saturday, besides if we are going to have something it would most probably just be Tyler, James and Willow that I will invite.”  “Willow, well then I better prepare for eight since she is going to be there” the both of them start to laugh.

As she walks to school, she gets excited, hopefully we can go and do some training this afternoon!  She looks up and sees Tyler already waiting with James and Willow at the corner where they always meet.  “Listen guys my aunt wants us to come together on Saturday for my birthday party, you guys want to come with?” she asks when she joins them.  It almost looks like Willows eyes want to pop out of her head when she hears that, “I hope there is going to be lots of snacks!” her mouth-watering.  James pushes playfully against her, “you haven’t even said yes that you are going to go, but you are already talking about treats and snacks. “Everyone starts laughing at her.  They all agree that they are going to come on Saturday.

She moves in between James and Tyler and takes Tyler’s hand in hers and pulls him a bit down to her, “are we going to train this afternoon” she whispers in his ear.  He looks at her with and nods yes with a big grin on his face.  The two of them makes arrangements to meet behind the bakery after he went home to put on better suited clothes for training.

After Clarise rushes home to put on her training clothes, she has a quick lunch, pack some water bottles in her backpack and set off to the bakery.  She waits a while before he makes his appearance.  “Sorry my stepmom had me do some things for her before I could get away” he says taking her by her shoulders and giving her a big kiss.

She missed that feeling so much, she leans in pressing herself against him.  Her hands flow down his back and she grabs his ass gently messaging it.  He pulls away his lips and puts his forehead against hers, “I’m sorry for the way that I have been behaving.  I think best we go now before; I do something…” he says panting.  “What do you want to do?” she asks him biting her lower lip.  “I want to rip of all of your clothes and kiss you all over your body, I want to kiss you where you have never been kissed before” he says running his index finger from her lips down her through between her breasts up to her belly button.

“One day she replies” with a naught smile on her face and pulling away, “now come let’s go!” she pulls him. 

Once they reach Old Town, they start to take a jog, once they reach the zoo they take a breather, and have some water.  Walking through the zoo feels like they are been transported to another world, the air is crisp and a cool breeze blows through the leaves.  Once they reach the wall Clarise jumps right up on top of the all extending her arm and helping Tyler to get up.  “Do you think I will also become as strong and agile as you” he asks her.  “I really have no idea but I hope so” she goes on to talk to him about Vanus and that there might be one that is strong enough to posses her.
