Maria was shocked but remained calm as Frank drove to the hospital. They had waited for an ambulance to confirm what they already knew and then slipped away before there were any awkward questions. Frank was still feeling exposed and concerned about what lay ahead.
They walked into the busy reception at St. Thomas’ Hospital and asked a stressed looking young woman behind the desk where John Rhodes was. She tapped on the keyboard and narrowed her eyes at the screen. She looked up at them. “Are you relatives?”
“Work colleague.”
She smiled thinly and gestured towards a row of red plastic seats. “Could you wait and I’ll get the doctor.”
“Is something wrong?”
“The doctor will explain further,” she replied quickly and then looked back down at her monitor.
