Chapter 6, Encountering Xia Yu
Channing MacArthur's expression remained calm, but a barely perceptible light flashed in his eyes. "Don't play these tricks in front of me."
Shen Bei was stunned for a moment. It took her a while to understand what he meant. She had never experienced romantic relationships, but she did watch TV dramas...
Did he think she was deliberately trying to seduce him?
Lowering her head, she didn't intend to explain.
With his status, whatever he said was right. With her status, any explanation might just be seen as an excuse.
Turning around, she didn't even bother to say goodbye and returned to her room.
Her mother often said that her personality was too cold. In truth, she wanted to defend herself. In high school, she was the vice president of the student council, known for her cheerful and lively nature.
But in front of her mother, she had never dared to laugh loudly or lose her composure, because it would make her mother unhappy.
Her mother always said that a woman should act like a woman. At first, she found it painful to hold back, but after six years, she no longer needed to force herself; she had become as calm as water.
At noon, Gordon MacArthur said he wanted some dessert, so she took the time to make some. Over the past few years, to make her mother's meals more enjoyable, she hadn't learned much else, but her cooking skills had improved significantly.
After finishing, she saw that Gordon MacArthur would probably still be asleep for a while, so she decided to take a nap. Last night, she had made noodles for Channing MacArthur, and then spent a long time thinking, which kept her up late. Now, her head felt heavy.
As she went upstairs, she saw the servant coming down, out of breath. "the servant, what's the rush? Is something wrong?"
"Oh, it's Bei?" the servant patted her head, "Look at me, you’re the perfect person for this. Who else would I find?"
She handed a transparent bag to Shen Bei. "These are the young master's medications. Could you deliver them to him?"
"Medications?" Shen Bei held up the bag, reading the small print: "Depression, sleep aid?"
She was taken aback. How could such an arrogant person be depressed?
Noticing her confusion, the servant sighed imperceptibly. "The young master had an incident when he was young, and since then, he has had trouble sleeping. He needs to take these medications."
Shen Bei nodded. There were always some unspeakable things in wealthy families, and it was better for her to know less.
"Shouldn't we have the driver deliver them? I'm not familiar with the way," she tried to decline, really not wanting to interact more with that man.
"I'm afraid the driver might not keep his mouth shut. These matters shouldn't be known by outsiders."
Outsiders? Wasn't she an outsider too?
"Bei, please help out. The young master is leaving for a business trip this afternoon, and if we don't send the medications now, it might be too late."
Business trip? Can't he just buy some there? Doesn't he have plenty of money?
"These medications can't be bought just anywhere." Although the servant wasn't from the business world, living in the Ning family for so many years, she had learned to read people well. Seeing Shen Bei's hesitation, she continued patiently, "Forget it, go on with your work. I’ll go myself."
Shen Bei thought about how the servant's health wasn't good and softened.
Standing at the foot of the skyscraper, Shen Bei took a deep breath. This was her first time entering such a luxurious building, and she felt like Liu Laolao entering the Grand View Garden, a bit nervous.
Finding the reception desk, she explained her purpose. The receptionist looked her up and down, clearly skeptical.
However, she politely asked her to sit in a chair and called the top-floor executive office.
"Delivering medication? The president didn't mention anything. Refuse her. In the future, you should learn to handle these situations yourself." The secretary hung up unceremoniously.
The receptionist, scolded, turned to Shen Bei, her face darkening. "Miss, I'm sorry, but they said no one was supposed to deliver medications, so we can't let you go up."
She turned away, ignoring her.
These days, women who wanted to get close to the president used all sorts of tricks.
Shen Bei closed her eyes and sighed in frustration.
It wasn't normal if people didn't judge by appearances in this society.
Taking out her phone, she tried calling the servant, hoping she could talk to Channing MacArthur, but the call wouldn't go through.
She wanted to leave, but felt responsible for the task.
So, she found a spot near the entrance and sat down. the servant said he would be leaving for a business trip in the afternoon, so waiting here should be right.
Leaning back in the chair, she felt drowsy.
"Bei..." In her daze, she heard someone calling her, a man's voice.
Opening her eyes, she recognized the person and stood up abruptly.
"Doctor... Doctor, why are you here?"
Shen Bei was surprised to meet someone she knew in City C.
Sharon Keynes, without hesitation, stepped forward and pulled her into a hug.
"When your mother passed away, I was on a business trip. When I came back and called your number, it was disconnected. I thought I'd never see you again."
He had heard that she had been asking about the MacArthur Group, so he came here to try his luck, not expecting to actually meet her.
Because of her mother's illness, they had known each other for about four or five years. Though her appearance was the most ordinary among the women he knew, her heart was the most beautiful.
He remembered the first time he saw her. He was making rounds, and she was being scolded by her mother. Despite the harsh words, she didn't get angry and instead smiled, advising her mother not to hurt herself.
In that moment, he became more interested in this ordinary girl.
Later, he saw her crying behind her mother's back, but after wiping her tears, she told jokes to a little cancer patient. Even though she was exhausted, she still massaged the legs of an elderly patient in the same ward after her surgery.
Over the years, she had always taken care of her mother alone, without friends or family, yet she never complained.
Her many shining qualities made Sharon Keynes feel like he had found a treasure.
Unfortunately, she was always indifferent towards him, which only made him more infatuated.
Previously, her mother's prejudice against him made it hard for them to even speak. Finally, when there was no barrier between them, she disappeared.
During this time, her absence left him with an indescribable sense of loss and emptiness, making him realize he had fallen for this ordinary girl.
Caught off guard by his sudden embrace, Shen Bei felt a bit embarrassed. After coming here, she changed her phone number, wanting to cut ties with her past, and hadn't thought about contacting anyone.
Sharon Keynes, 182 cm tall, wore a half-high neck beige sweater and light-colored jeans. His features, unlike Channing MacArthur's rugged ones, were more delicate, giving him the look of a Korean drama heartthrob, a warm and caring man.
He was her mother's primary doctor. Because of her mother's illness, which required chemotherapy and frequent hospital stays, they had become friends over the years.
But to her, he was just someone she could chat with and greet, nothing more.
So, his current enthusiasm made her feel both awkward and flattered.
"I..." She didn't know how to explain her current situation, biting her lip, looking down, hesitating to speak.
