Chapter 8, Questioning Her Identity
"Master Ning, it's about time we head to the airport," Liu Xu managed to make his voice sound as normal as possible after a great effort. His words helped ease the awkward atmosphere on the scene, and everyone else chimed in.
Channing MacArthur, sitting in the car, watched Liu Xu, whose shoulders were still shaking with suppressed laughter, and threw a folder at him, hitting the steering wheel. "If you want to laugh, then laugh." He knew today's incident would become a black mark in his life.
"Haha..." Liu Xu didn't hold back and started laughing uncontrollably. "Haha... I must say, classmate Channing MacArthur, how does it feel? Not too good, right? Haha..." It wasn't surprising he was gloating; they had been classmates since middle school, and from the day they met, Channing MacArthur had always been the center of attention. He had never seen Ning being treated so indifferently, especially by a nanny.
When Shen Bei opened the black paper bag Sharon Keynes gave her, she found several packs of sanitary pads, for both day and night use, and even different brands. She couldn't help but chuckle; this man was indeed thoughtful. There was also a pair of women's underwear and a pair of jeans in the bag. Her face flushed again; his thoughtfulness was truly remarkable, and it touched her deeply.
After quickly getting everything sorted, she left the restroom and saw Sharon Keynes leaning against the corner. Seeing her come out, Sharon Keynes walked up to her. "All done?" he asked straightforwardly, making Shen Bei blush once more.
"Thank you," she said, almost inaudibly.
Sharon Keynes pressed his lips together, the corners of his mouth lifting. As proud as he was, he never imagined he would do such a thing for a woman, and yet, he felt quite satisfied after doing it. "Where are you going? I can give you a ride."
Shen Bei actually didn't want to trouble Sharon Keynes anymore, but looking at the time, if she didn't get back soon, Gordon MacArthur would likely wake up and cause a fuss. "I'm sorry to bother you, Doctor."
"Shen Bei, is your conscience made of stone? After all that, you’re still so formal?" Hearing her call him Doctor again, Sharon Keynes stopped and complained, looking like a child who didn't get his candy, feeling very wronged.
Shen Bei licked her dry lips, feeling both amused and exasperated, and turned to look at Sharon Keynes. She extended her right hand and said seriously, "Sharon Keynes, my name is Shen Bei. Please take care of me from now on."
Her hand was grasped firmly, and then came Sharon Keynes's bright smile—so sunny, so dazzling, yet so out of reach.
"Shaochen, we don't need to go to the airport anymore. How about we wait for your nanny and give her a ride?" Liu Xu had just received a call saying plans had changed, and there was no need to travel. Liu Xu, having calmed down from his earlier merriment, turned to ask for Channing MacArthur's opinion, adding, "Taxis can't get in there, you know."
But Channing MacArthur was still in a bad mood and glared at him. "Since when did you become so kind-hearted? How she gets back is her business. Drive!" With that, he turned to look out the window, just in time to see Shen Bei and Sharon Keynes walking out together.
She was wearing the black-and-white checkered shirt, and it seemed she had changed into new pants. The well-made clothes made her look much more spirited. However, thinking about her behavior towards him earlier, he closed his eyes and refused to look at her any longer. A mere nanny wasn't worth his concern.
But...
"Oh, I see, your little nanny knows someone pretty rich. An Aston Martin... limited edition, too. And he looks decent. What's their relationship? The guy seems to really like her... Look, he even opened the door for her. Do you think this guy has..."
"Are you going or not? If you’re not, get out of the car." Channing MacArthur cut off Liu Xu's chatter, feeling even more irritated. Opening his eyes, he looked through the rearview mirror at the car behind them. A mere nanny, knowing such a high-profile man, and the man seemed to have a keen interest in her. It appeared that she hadn't taken the job for money, and her cold attitude toward him versus her warm one toward the man confirmed she had no interest in him. This made him feel extremely uncomfortable. She had said he was the top-tier among the rich and handsome, but she couldn't afford to love him. So, could she afford to love this man? Hypocritical!
"Check who that man is and what their relationship is," he ordered, yanking off his tie.
"Why check? What's the matter? Ignored and want to turn the tables?"
Channing MacArthur ignored him, closing his eyes.
"You can't expect every woman in the world to fall for you, right? Different strokes for different folks. You’re rich and handsome, but that doesn't mean everyone will like you," Liu Xu continued, taking advantage of the opportunity to tease him while driving. "But a nanny can't compare to Miss Duncan, so you shouldn't take it to heart. You should be glad she doesn't fancy you, right?"
"I'm worried about my son. If she's not here for money or for someone, why is she taking care of Gordon MacArthur?" Channing MacArthur interrupted, his tone icy. Although he had resisted Gordon MacArthur's sudden appearance, he was his father and needed to take responsibility.
"As for you, didn't you say she had a simple background? Do you think a woman who knows such a man could have a simple background? I bet you’re planning to report to your father, aren't you?"
His father, the military? Liu Xu shook his head quickly and shut up, not daring to say another word. He had never won an argument with this man. But, he had indeed investigated her, and there had been no issues.
Since Sharon Keynes was not familiar with the roads in City C, it was already past five o'clock when they arrived at the Ning residence.
"What... are you doing here?" Looking at the sign that read "MacArthur Residence," Sharon Keynes couldn't help but ask.
