The parlor was deserted, quiet, and dead in the absence of the people. An eerie silence almost resounded from each corner. The hurrying feet of William echoed through the vacant space, scurrying towards the room where Robert had retired to, beset by a growing sense of misgiving and anxiety about his friend. Upon arrival, he found Robert's room similarly deserted; the silence made his concern greater and propelled him towards the quarters of visitors where Jessica was staying. His mind whirled with possibilities: Where was Jessica? He reached for the handle, not hesitating, and grasped it tightly, turning his hand in a continuous motion as the door creaked open to yield to the forceful entry.
