We walk away from the crowd and down the street, dodging other tourists and stopping often, appearing interested in the shops we’re passing. Eventually we come to the main street that looks out onto the Sphinx. I’ve never seen it before except in photographs, and even though I know we’re here just to make a show of things, it still takes my breath away. We walk as close to it as we can, blocked by a short wall to prevent tourists from getting too close. It looms up in front of us, despite being a good football pitch away. It’s truly enormous; higher that any house or building I’ve ever seen and as long as it is high.
