CHAPTER 18 It takes us about a minute to get the balance between our powers right so that we’re definitely both invisible, but after that we skim easily over the forest and head towards the village, straight for Mrs. Wrenshaw’s house. The sun appears on the horizon; I worry that people might notice our shadows, but Attou assures me that the “see not” technique extends to those too. Along the way, I find that I can contact all the animals we pass while still maintaining our invisibility. It’s not like speaking to them individually, but I can sense whether they’ve felt the terrible evil that we associate with Bethamous. As far as I can tell from them, Mrs. Wrenshaw did indeed go back to her house after she watched Alex start the fire, but whether he took the book to her, I’m still not sure
