Graduation Proper attire: no jeans, no shorts, no sneakers. That’s all the boys needed to remember. As for the girls, they basically needed to be wrapped like mummies: no spaghetti-strap dresses, no open-toe shoes, skirts to the knees, etc., etc. All us graduates are lined up in the cafeteria. I know Kenny’s homeroom teacher announced the dress requirements, yet here he is, still a little hunched over, with jean shorts, sneakers, and a Hawaiian-looking shirt. Our principal, Mr. Smith, pulls him aside. Mr. Smith is speaking to him calmly, but Kenny’s not trying to hear it. He punches the door, and then walks out. I knew he didn’t have clothes for graduation. I should’ve taken him a pair of dress pants and a button-up shirt, and just played it off like I wanted us to dress alike. We file
