THE OPENING OF OSTROH ACADEMY IN 1576
Ostroh Academy, founded in Volyn by well-known Ukrainian enlighteners of the sixteenth century, the Princes of Ostroh, was not the oldest educational institution of the kind in Ukraine. Nevertheless, its foundation may undoubtedly be considered a milestone in the history of our country.
Vasyl-Kostiantyn of Ostroh
The Academy in the town of Ostroh was founded in 1576 by Prince Vasyl-Kostiantyn of Ostroh. However, the prince was not the only person who encouraged the opening of the new educational establishment. Considerable funds were provided by his niece Princess Halshka of Ostroh. Other members of the family also supported opening of the school.
