Who am I?

Jessica POV My eyes started to flutter open, as I regained consciousness. I could hear an irritating beeping sound, close to my head and the brightest fluorescent lights hurt my eyes, forcing me to keep them close. After a few minutes, my eyes started to adjust to the bright light. I opened them slightly and glanced around the room. The room was painted white, there was an armchair in the corner, and I could see a bathroom, through an open door. I was laying down on a small bed with white sheets. I glanced under the sheets and found that I was wearing a blue hospital gown. I looked behind me and saw that the beeping was coming from a heart monitor, that had wires running to my chest. I had a needle sticking out of my hand, with a tube that led to an IV bag full of clear fluid, it was hanging above my head on a hook. The realization hit me, I was in a hospital room. The weird thing was, that I couldn’t remember how I got here, was I injured? I looked over my body and couldn’t find anything obvious, that indicated that I had been injured. There was a pair of jeans and a black tank top sitting on the armchair, with a pair of combat boots on the floor beside it. I was brought out of my thoughts when a nurse walked into the room, she was wearing blue scrubs. She was around 20 years old, 5’5, with a blonde bob and hazel-colored eyes. She was smiling widely at me. “Glad to see you're finally awake. My name's Samantha, I’m one of the nurses here.” She said, in a cheerful voice. “How long have I been here?” I asked, with a confused frown. “You’ve been in a coma for a week.” She replied, with her own frown. “What happened?” I asked. “We don’t know, a hiker found you on a trail In the forest, just behind the hospital, and brought you in.” She replied. “Do you remember anything?” She asked curiously. I started to rack my brain, but I couldn’t remember anything. “No.” I said barely above a whisper. “We couldn’t find any injuries on you and none of the tests we ran, came back abnormal. We still don’t know what caused you to be in a coma.” She replied, looking concerned. I didn’t say anything, I was still trying to rack my brain for any information, that might help me figure out what happened, but I kept coming up empty-handed. “I’ll go get the doctor, she’ll want to ask you some questions,” Samantha said while giving me a small smile, as she made her way to the door. “Thank you.” I practically whispered as she disappeared through the door. Only a few minutes later, the door opened again. An older woman in her fifty’s walked in. She was wearing a white doctor's jacket and was holding a clipboard. She was thin and tall, with shoulder length, salt, and pepper hair. “Good morning Jessica. I’m Doctor Douglas.” She said while approaching my bed. Jessica? Who’s Jessica, I wondered. “Good morning, who’s Jessica?“ I asked, curiously. “Oh, I assumed that was your name, dear. We found an identification card, in the jeans you were wearing.” She replied, with a frown. “Oh.” I said quietly while thinking. What was my name? I don’t remember. “What is your name, sweetheart?” She asked, looking concerned. “I don’t remember.” I said nervously, while still trying to rack my brain for anything helpful. “Where do you live?” She asked, with the same concerned frown. “I can’t remember.” I replied softly while looking down at my hands. “Well sweet heart, you’ve been in a coma for a week, it might just take you a little while to regain your memory. Rest, I want to run a few more tests. We still haven’t figured out, why you were in a coma, in the first place.” She said, with a small smile, but still looked concerned. “Ok.” I said softly, and I watched as the doctor disappeared through the door. Panic started to run through me. Who am I? Where did I come from? Where is my family? I couldn’t remember anything from my past. It was starting to scare me. Where do I go, when I leave the hospital? I can’t remember where I live, I can’t remember anything. I spent an hour just lying in bed, trying to remember, but it was no use. I was brought out of my thoughts when the door opened. It was Samantha the nurse. “Hey Hun, how are you doing?” She asked softly. “I don’t remember anything. What am I going to do?” I asked panic started to come through in my voice. “One day at a time, I’m sure your memory will come back. Sometimes this happens, after waking up from a coma.” She said, with a small reassuring smile. “When do I get to leave?” I asked. “The doctor wants to keep you overnight, for observation. Then, as long as nothing comes back with the tests we’re conducting, you’ll be free to go.” She replied. “Thank you.” I said softly. “It’ll be ok hun, keep your chin up. I’m sure someone is out there looking for you.” She said, again trying to reassure me. I just gave her a small smile, before she left the room. I laid in bed awake most of the night. Wonder where I would go tomorrow. Morning came around and Samantha brought me some breakfast. “Good morning.” She said in a chipper tone. “Morning.” I replied, with a smile. “I have good news, the doctor said, that all the tests came back normal. Your free to go, once we fill out your discharge documents.” She said, excitedly. “Oh.” Was all I replied. “What’s wrong?” She asked, with a concerned frown. “Well, it’s just, I don’t know where I’m going to go.” I replied, barely above a whisper. She didn’t say anything for a few seconds. “Oh hun, you know what, I live by myself in a two-bedroom apartment. Come stay with me, until you get yourself on track.” She offered, with a soft voice. I looked up at her and I could tell, the offer was sincere. “Are you sure? I don’t want to be a burden.” I asked, hopeful. “No, not at all, I wouldn’t mind the company. plus, eventually when you get a job, maybe you could chip in with the rent.” She added. “Absolutely, I will start looking for work as soon as I get out of here. Thank you so much, I don’t know what I would have done without your generous offer.” I said, sincerely. “No problem. I finish work at 5:00pm, so if you meet me back here then, I’ll take you back to my place.” She said, sounding excited about having a new roommate. “Thank you.” I replied, I was also feeling excited that I had a place to stay. Samantha came over to the bed and took out the IV needle and removed the heart monitor stickers before she left the room. After Samantha left my room, I got up to use the bathroom. I glanced in the mirror and it felt strange, I didn’t even recognize the face that was looking back at me. I was short, around 5’3, with a slim but curvy body. My straight raven black hair fell down to the middle of my back. My eyes were a beautiful emerald green color, they stood out the most out of all my facial features. They were shaped like perfect almonds and my thick black eyelashes made the color pop. I sighed in frustration. Who is this girl in the mirror? I don’t even recognize her. After I was done in the bathroom, I decided to get dressed in the clothes that sat on the armchair. Once I was dressed, I sat back on the bed and waited, I was bored, there wasn’t anything for me to do. It wasn’t long before Samantha came back, carrying a clipboard with documents. Ok, your free to go, just signed here.” She said and handed me the clipboard. I didn’t even know how to sign. I couldn’t remember my name. I had looked at the identification card, but there wasn’t a picture, just a name, Jessica Bradford, and a date of birth, August, 18th, 2002. If this was really my identity, yesterday was my 19th birthday. I decided to scribble the name Jessica on the paper, since It was the only name I knew. “Perfect, come by in a couple of hours and I’ll take you back to my place.” Samantha said, with a smile. “Sounds good, I’ll see you later.” I replied, as I stood from the bed and started to walk towards the door. I left the hospital, it was a warm summer day. The streets were busy with people walking around everywhere, going about their daily business. I must be in a big city, there were tall skyscrapers lining the streets and traffic was heavy. I walked around for hours, just people-watching and trying to figure out, where I fit into this world. I found this cute little coffee shop called, Rise and Shine. It looked busy inside. I decided to go in, I really needed to use the restroom and maybe they would give me a glass of water. The warm sun had made me thirsty. Once inside, I saw the restroom door and went there first. Once I was done, I came back out and got in line. There was a handsome man, around 20 years old, behind the counter. He was around 6’2, with a muscular, yet slim build. He had short blonde hair and blue eyes. He wore a smile on his face and seemed genuinely friendly. When it was my turn to approach the counter, I watched as his eyes met mine and his smile grew wider. “Hey, what can I get for ya?” He asked, with a friendly voice. “Could I have a cup of water?” I asked softly. “Sure, coming right up.” He said while giving me a wink. He handed me the water and I smiled. “Do you happen to know if the owners are hiring?” I asked, hopeful. “Actually, I’m the owner. My name's Brad and I could use an extra set of hands. Why don’t you come by first thing in the morning, so we can talk, let’s say 6:00am? It should be quiet around here at that time.” He offered, giving me another smile. “Oh yes, I’ll be here at 6:00am. My name's Jessica, Thank you.” I smiled at him, before turning around and leaving the coffee shop with my water. I was feeling excited at the possibility that I had already found a job and a place to stay.
