Chapter Twenty Three

1097 Words
The night was chilly, the wind threatening to uproot roots off the ground but Ivy and Tessa stood outside the archive room. “Don't let anyone get a glimpse at you. Don't make me lose my job,” Ivy heard a shaky voice from inside the room, one that could only belong to a withered old man. Tessa's voice came next. “We would be careful, nothing is going to happen,” She said and held him outside. “Hello Bram,” Ivy waved as Old Bram, the record keeper walked out with thousands of keys dangling from his fingers. “Luna, you're here too,” he sighed and turned back to Tessa. “Here.” He fished out a key from the millions of key in his hands and placed it on her open palms. “Don't misplace it,” He added in a stern voice. “I won't, I won't.” Tessa pinched her forehead and led him out of the room. When she returned, Ivy raised an eyebrow at her. “He finds it difficult to refuse me. I worked with him when I was assigned here, but he doesn't let me go into the storage room,” Tessa explained. Ivy was in her room when Tessa had mind linked her and instructed her to meet her at the record room. “Let's get in,we could find more information about your parents here.” Tessa said and pulled Ivy in. The smell of cold and old books attacked their nostrils as they stepped in. “Well, well, here comes nothing,” Ivy sighed as she caught sight of the soaked boxes. “Let's find a box from that year,” Tessa instructed and they got to work. They pushed past most of the boxes, in search of one from the year her parents died. “Here it is,” Tessa called her attention and placed a box on the wooden desk. Ivy looked the box over and shook her head. “Soaked with water,” she commented. “We could get something from it even,” Tessa shook her head and they dug into the box. “Mr and Mrs Hale,” Ivy read out, an envelope in her hand. She poured the contents of the envelope to the desk and they rummaged through it. The records were old, wet and mostly damaged. Her high hopes of finding out what happened to her parents had diminished by the state of the records. “Some of these records were tampered with,” Tessa groaned in frustration. “Someone was definitely hiding something,” she added. Some papered were crossed with different inks, making it impossible to read. Mr and Mrs Hale were mentioned as average wolves, ranked mid in the ranks of wolves till something happened. The conspiracy. They had no prior incident till suddenly they were involved in the Alpha couples death. The jump was clean for an incident that huge. The investigation were performed quickly as they were basically no record of investigation whatsoever. “What do you think?” Ivy turned to Tessa. “Their death was a coverup. A huge one for someone important,” Tessa said grimly. They continued reading. Their case was concluded, investigated and they were executed the same week of Zeke's parents death. Too quick, too fast. At the bottom of the page, their executors names were mentioned. The head of the execution was Alpha Darius. The acting Alpha head from the time they died. “This is common knowledge,” Ivy sighed and ran her fingers through her head. “I asked Bram. He said your parents were guilty.” Tessa muttered. “I know they were guilty. But this operation is too big for mid ranked wolves to carry out by themselves. Someone somewhere were giving instructions and they took the fall,” Ivy said. “That must be it. But who is the instructor?” Tessa asked. “That's the question and what we must find out.” Tessa took a sweeping glance at the files when her eyes fell on a scrap of paper, near the bottom of a deteriorated file, tucked into the spine. It was worn, stained and half destroyed from water but her guts told her it was important. Very important. She held it out towards Ivy's eyes. Only a partial letter remained. A. “Looks like something smuggled into the files,” Ivy said and Tessa nodded in agreement. “I would ask Old Bram if he knows anything about it.” Tessa said and pockets the paper. They worked together to put back the place to how they met it and left. Ivy pushed her door open and falls on her bed. Misty came easily this time, she could feel her nuzzling her furs against her. “You're almost there,” She said. “Don't give up.” “I'm trying not to give up.” Ivy sighed. “Try harder. The truth is closer than you think.” Misty said. They wallowed in the silence for a moment before Ivy spoke again. “What do you think about Enid?” “The one trying to take out mate? Crush her. She's a princess and had lived like that all her life,” Misty growled and ivy chuckled. “Possessive?” “Don't tell me you aren't dying to scratch her face off,” Misty scoffed. “I can't wait. I'm going to make her and Zeke's life a living hell,” She promised. “Is she pretty?” She asked slowly, almost in a whisper. She didn't want to sound unsure of her appearance but she was starting to think maybe that was the reason Zeke was rejecting her. Misty stayed silent for a while as if mocking her. “She's pretty but we're more prettier than her. She's built on makeup and beauty amplifiers.” She said. “Then why's Zeke rejecting us?” “It's not his fault.” “I know it isn't, it's mine then.” “Ivy, our mate is being pressured from all sides and we aren't there to help him. We're even adding more pressure.” Misty said. It wasn't like ivy was unaware, she was just feeling a little tired. “So we should accept the rejection?” She rolled her eyes, hoping misty could see it it or at least feel it. “Of course no. We're getting our mate back.” Misty said. “As for Enid…” “We're going to crush her,” Ivy chuckled.
