Chapter 2: The Ice Cracks

1329 Words
"Jasmine, I don’t have all day," Gabriel Knight’s voice cuts through the thick silence of his sleek office, sending a jolt of unease through me. His icy gaze is fixed on me, sharp and unyielding. I sit across from him, my palms sweating in the air-conditioned coolness. I clench them tightly, trying to maintain some semblance of composure. I won't let him see how much he rattles me. "Of course," I say, forcing the words out with as much professionalism as I can muster, though my voice shakes slightly. "I don’t have all day either." Gabriel’s lips twist into a slight smirk, but it’s devoid of any real humor. "We’re both busy people. Let’s get to the point." I swallow hard. I hate this. Hated him when I first met him. Cold. Detached. He’s everything I’ve sworn to avoid—rich, powerful, and ruthless. But here I am, sitting across from him, trying to find a way to make my life and Lily’s life a little better. His piercing eyes flicker over my tired face, and something like recognition—something almost… human—flashes across his face. But just as quickly, it’s gone. "You look like you haven’t slept in days." His voice is surprisingly soft for a man like him. It’s almost like he’s noticing me for the first time. I raise an eyebrow, fighting to keep my guard up. "You don’t look like you’ve missed a meal." The smirk returns, but this time, I swear I see a flicker of something else—an acknowledgment of our shared burden. It vanishes as quickly as it appears. "I’m not here to discuss my eating habits, Jasmine." "Right." I take a deep breath, forcing myself to focus. "You want me to consult for your company. I get it. But I’m not here to be another pawn in your little empire." Gabriel’s expression tightens, and he leans forward, his steely gaze never leaving mine. "I don’t play games, Jasmine. If I wanted a pawn, I’d have a thousand other options." His words hit harder than I expected. My chest tightens, the weight of his unspoken challenge pressing on me. "Then why am I here?" "Because you’re strong," he says, the words coming slowly, like he’s testing them for sincerity. "And you’re smart. Something about you intrigues me. You’ve got fire, and I don’t see that often. It’s rare in this world." I stare at him, stunned by the bluntness of his words. It’s the first time he’s said something that feels… real. I hate that I almost believe him. "I don’t want to be a part of your world, Gabriel. I don’t need your money, and I certainly don’t need your pity." His lips curl, but it’s not quite a smile. "This isn’t about pity, Jasmine. If you think that, you don’t know me at all." I don’t respond. I can’t. I’ve spent so long protecting Lily, keeping her away from people like Gabriel, people who can tear your life apart without a second thought. But somehow, he keeps chipping away at my defenses. I cross my arms, the words biting as I speak. "I’ll never be one of your employees, Gabriel. And I’ll never bow to your control." He stares at me, his expression unreadable. But there’s something in his eyes—a flicker of respect, perhaps? Maybe even something darker, something I can’t quite name. "You don’t have to bow. You just have to make a choice. But remember, choices have consequences." I lean forward, narrowing my eyes. "I’m not interested in your games. I’ve played that game before, and it cost me everything." Gabriel tilts his head slightly, his gaze sharpening. "You think you’ve got it all figured out? That you’ve been the only one who’s ever had to make tough choices?" I feel the burn of his words, but I don’t back down. "I don’t need you to lecture me, Gabriel. I’ve lost too much already. All I want is a way out of this mess—something better for Lily. That’s it." His expression falters for a split second, his icy demeanor cracking just enough for me to glimpse the man behind the mask. He clears his throat, regaining control. "Then we understand each other. But you’re still not answering my offer." My jaw clenches. I won’t let him manipulate me into accepting anything. "I’m not here to make deals with you." Gabriel’s gaze hardens again, his voice colder than before. "Don’t mistake me for someone you can ignore, Jasmine. I didn’t bring you here to play nice." I push back, my frustration getting the best of me. "And I didn’t come here for your insults, Gabriel. Do you want something from me? Fine. But don’t pretend like this is about anything but control." "Maybe," he admits, his voice low. "But it’s also about something more. About seeing if you can handle what I’m offering." "And what’s that?" I challenge, my heart pounding. "Opportunity." The word hangs in the air, heavy with meaning, but before I can respond, his phone rings—sharp and insistent. Gabriel’s expression hardens as he picks it up. "What is it?" he demands, his usual calm replaced by tension. I watch him, my curiosity piqued despite myself. His eyes narrow, and his lips tighten. "Where?" he asks, his voice low, barely controlled. He listens for a moment, his jaw clenched so tightly I think it might snap. When he speaks again, there’s an edge to his voice that’s hard to ignore. "We’ll deal with this. You handle the press. I want answers—now." His phone goes silent, and Gabriel stands abruptly, his chair scraping harshly against the polished floor. "Excuse me," he mutters, his cold, calculated demeanor returning with alarming speed. "Something’s come up." I stand, half-expecting him to walk away without a word. But he turns to me, his gaze piercing through me, as though weighing something—something more than just business. Before I can say a word, Gabriel opens his mouth, his voice low and almost vulnerable, "Don’t take this the wrong way, Jasmine, but—" The door slams open before he can finish, and Gabriel strides out, leaving me alone in the silence of his grand office. I sit back down, my head spinning. What just happened? I thought I’d come here to fight him. I thought I’d come to take control of my life, but somehow, I feel like I’ve walked into something far deeper than I ever expected. As I stare at the empty door, my phone buzzes in my pocket. I pull it out, and my heart drops when I see the name on the screen: Colin. I press the answer button, but before I can speak, his voice fills my ear. "You have a choice to make, Jasmine." His tone is smug, as though he’s already won. "Colin, I—" "You’re going to lose this battle. I want full custody of Lily, and I’m not backing down." My breath catches in my throat, and for a moment, I can’t speak. "What do you think you’re doing?" I whisper, barely able to hold back the tears that threaten to break through. His laugh echoes on the other end of the line. "I’m doing what you never could. I’m taking what’s mine." I hang up, the weight of his words sinking deep into my chest. And as I sit there, alone in the silence of the office, I realize I’ve just stepped into a war. A war that could destroy everything I’ve fought for. But I won’t give up. Not now. Not ever. I stand, my decision made. And just as I turn to leave, I hear Gabriel’s voice, cold and distant, echoing in the hallway. "Are you ready for this, Jasmine?" I stop in my tracks, my heart pounding. I don’t answer. Instead, I turn and walk out. The battle’s only just begun. "Are you ready for this?”
