"You're not listening to me," Gabriel's voice was tight, strained. "I’m offering you a way out of this mess, Jasmine. Help me, and I’ll make sure you win this custody battle."
I shook my head, my heart pounding in my chest. "What’s the catch, Gabriel? What do you want from me?"
His lips curled into a smile that didn’t reach his eyes. "You already know what I want. Help me with the business venture, and I’ll use my resources to ensure you get Lily. Simple as that."
I wanted to refuse. My pride, my independence—everything in me screamed to reject him, to fight on my own. But the thought of losing Lily, of having her ripped away from me, gnawed at my insides.
"Don’t do this," I said, my voice shaking. "Don’t make me feel like I owe you for every little thing."
Gabriel’s gaze sharpened, his tone colder than I had ever heard it. "I’m not making you owe me, Jasmine. I’m offering you a lifeline. You’re the one who’s struggling, not me."
I wanted to slap him, to shout that I didn’t need his help, but the words caught in my throat. His words dug deep, reminding me of just how little power I had in this fight. "I’m not some charity case," I whispered, my eyes lowering.
Gabriel’s jaw clenched. "I never said you were."
A long silence stretched between us, thick with tension. My heart was still racing, my mind a whirlwind of conflicting emotions. I didn’t want to need him. But there was a part of me that did. A part of me that just wanted the weight of the world to be lifted, even if that meant giving in to his control.
"You think you can control everything, don’t you?" I asked, my voice softer now, but filled with a biting edge. "This whole deal—this is just about control, Gabriel. You can’t stand not being in charge."
He didn’t flinch, his expression never wavering. "Control is the only thing that keeps me alive."
I looked at him, my heart pounding in my throat. "But what happens when that control slips away? What happens when you lose everything?"
For a moment, I saw something in his eyes—something vulnerable. But it was gone before I could even process it.
"I’m not losing anything," he said, his voice barely a whisper. "Not when it comes to you."
That statement took me by surprise. It was too honest, too raw, and for the first time, I saw the cracks in his icy façade. But I didn’t have time to process it because just then, his phone rang. He glanced at the screen, his face hardening again.
Without answering, he tossed the phone onto the couch and turned to me. "This isn’t just about us anymore. It’s about everything I’ve built."
"I didn’t ask for this. I didn’t ask for you to come into my life, to make things harder."
His eyes met mine, his expression unreadable. "You think this is hard? Try living with the consequences of every decision you make. Try carrying the weight of an empire on your shoulders."
I couldn’t respond. There was too much truth in his words, too much power in the way he said them. And then, before I could say anything else, his phone buzzed again. His hand shot out and grabbed it, his face falling as he read the message.
"That was my mother," he said, his voice flat. "She’s demanding that I sever ties with you. Or else."
I frowned, confusion clouding my mind. "Sever ties? Why would she—"
"She thinks you’re a threat to the family legacy," Gabriel interrupted, running a hand through his hair in frustration. "And she’s not the type of woman to be ignored."
"Why does that matter?" I asked, the words escaping before I could stop them. "She’s just... she’s your mother. Why should I care about her?"
"Because when she speaks, people listen," Gabriel said, his voice sharp. "And if I don’t comply, I lose everything I’ve fought for—everything my family has fought for."
The weight of his words hung in the air, thick and suffocating. I watched him closely, trying to read his expression, trying to figure out if he was bluffing and if this was just another way for him to control the situation.
"So, that’s it?" I said, barely able to breathe. "You’ll throw me away because she says so?"
"Don’t make me choose," Gabriel snapped, his voice laced with frustration. "You don’t understand what this means. My entire life, everything I’ve built, depends on her approval. I can’t lose that. I can’t lose my empire. You wouldn’t understand that, would you?"
I stood there, my heart in my throat. The man I thought I was beginning to understand, the man I thought I could trust, was suddenly so far out of reach. Everything about him screamed power and control, but it was a mask, a shield to hide his vulnerabilities. And now, I was seeing just how fragile that shield was.
"Is that all I am to you?" I whispered, my voice trembling. "A pawn in your game? A way to protect your precious empire?"
Gabriel’s face hardened, and for a moment, I saw the man who ran his empire with ruthless precision. The man who didn’t let anyone get too close. "You have no idea what it’s like, Jasmine. You have no idea what’s at stake."
"I have everything at stake, Gabriel," I said, my voice steady but cold. "Everything. But I’ll fight for Lily, with or without you."
Gabriel stared at me for a long moment, his eyes searching mine as if looking for something he couldn’t find. Finally, he spoke, his voice low and dangerous.
"I’m not asking you to fight alone."
But I wasn’t sure I could trust him. The darkness in his eyes made me question everything I thought I knew about him, and my heart, still aching from the last betrayal, was unwilling to take that risk.
"Then why are you making me choose?" I whispered, my words barely audible.
Gabriel’s expression faltered, but before he could answer, the phone rang again. This time, he answered it with a sharp command, his voice clipped and businesslike. As he spoke to whoever was on the other end, his face darkened further, his words growing more heated.
I stood there, watching him, feeling the distance between us grow. The man I had begun to care for, the man who had once seemed so cold and unyielding, was now a stranger in front of me.
And just as I was about to turn and leave, Gabriel dropped the phone onto the table, his face pale.
"Jasmine," he said, his voice strained. "I need you to understand. This isn’t just about us. It’s about everything. I can’t lose my family, my company... I can’t lose everything."
I took a step back, my heart breaking with every word. "Then why are you risking everything for me?"
Gabriel’s eyes met mine, his gaze filled with raw desperation. "Because I don’t know how to stop."
I shook my head, the confusion and fear overwhelming me. "I don’t know if I can keep doing this, Gabriel. I don’t know if I can keep fighting for something that might never be real."
Before he could respond, the door flew open, and Colin walked in, papers in hand.
"Jasmine," he said, his voice dripping with false sweetness. "I have the legal papers. It’s time we made this official."
I froze, my heart stopping in my chest. And then, without any warning, he placed the papers in front of me. The weight of them hit me like a physical blow.
I looked up at Gabriel, his face pale and rigid. But before I could say anything, he turned away, his expression hardening. All I could hear was the sound of my heart breaking as everything I feared came crashing down around me.
"Jasmine," Colin said again, a smirk on his face. "Let’s see if you can really protect your daughter.”
