Chapter 9 - Tangled Loyalties The rain hammered against the roof, drumming out a rhythm that matched the storm inside Teagan's chest. She crouched on Vanilla's porch, soaked through, trembling, not from cold, but from raw, unfiltered emotion. Her chest heaved, and the damp strands of her dark hair clung to her cheeks, streaked with tears. She had run through the forest, through mud and puddles, because anger and guilt and fear couldn't coexist in one place. Now, standing at Vanilla's doorstep, she was undone. Vanilla leaned down, her fingers brushing against Teagan's clammy hands. Her own hands were warm, grounding. "Hey... shh," she murmured, her voice low, soothing, like a hand against the chaos. "It's okay. Don't cry. Come on, let's get you inside." Teagan's lips quivered, but she allowed Vanilla to pull her up. The cold rain soaked through her clothes, plastering her skin. Vanilla led her inside, guiding her through the silent halls to her room. The smell of vanilla and faint sandalwood lingered in the air, making the house feel safe, like a bubble outside the storm. "Sit here," Vanilla said, guiding her to the chair by the bed. "I'll get you something dry. Shower first, then we can talk." Teagan nodded, though her throat felt tight. She could barely breathe, let alone speak. Vanilla disappeared into the bathroom closet, returning with soft pajamas and a fresh red robe. Teagan stepped into the shower, letting the hot water wash away the chill, the dirt, the panic, but not the guilt. Would she forgive me? Would she even look at me the same way again? Teagan thought, letting the water run down her spine. She could feel the heat beneath the surface, the pulsing ache in her chest for Vanilla. I don't deserve her. She should just... forget me. After what felt like forever, Teagan stepped out, wrapped herself in the soft clothes Vanilla handed her, and hesitated in the doorway. Her toes tapped nervously against the floor. Vanilla sat cross-legged at the head of the bed, her laptop open but mostly forgotten, eyes softening as they tracked Teagan's every move. "You okay to talk?" she asked gently. Teagan's gaze dropped to the floor. "Yeah... we can talk," she mumbled, barely audible. Her voice cracked. And then, quieter, almost broken, she added, "You... don't want me anymore, do you?" Vanilla's heart twisted. She set her laptop aside, standing to come closer. She pressed herself to Teagan's back, arms wrapping gently around her waist. "No," she whispered, her lips brushing the nape of Teagan's neck. "I want you. It's always been just you. But... you're a future queen. You have your responsibilities, your mom... the public. They won't ever understand us." Teagan stiffened slightly, but the tension melted under Vanilla's warmth. "You're important," she said, voice muffled against Vanilla's shoulder. "To me. That should be enough... but my mom... she's all about appearances. And I care, I shouldn't, but I have to. Or else... my family would object. My rights... my place..." Vanilla tilted her head, pressing her cheek against Teagan's temple. "It's okay," she murmured. "I just... I don't want to get hurt, but I know if I don't put myself out there, if I don't risk it, nothing will ever happen. And I want this, Teagan. I want you. All of you." Teagan's hands fidgeted at her sides, then finally she let them slide up, holding Vanilla's arms. "I'm sorry," she whispered, "you deserve better than me. Maybe... maybe you should be with Rayyan." Vanilla chuckled softly, a sound of both amusement and reassurance. "How about this," she said, turning Teagan to face her, "I can see Rayyan casually. You handle the public stuff with the governor's daughter. That way, it's fair, and we still get each other." Teagan hesitated, biting her lip, the weight of her role pressing down, the sting of jealousy flaring, but finally she nodded. "Okay," she whispered, her voice tinged with surrender and relief. Vanilla grinned, tugging her down onto the bed. "It's late. Stay tonight. We can spend the day together tomorrow." The morning light filtered softly through the curtains. Teagan stirred first, watching Vanilla's serene face, the soft rise and fall of her chest. She felt a pull in her chest, fierce and undeniable. I could wake up to her every day, she thought. I'll do whatever it takes to make her happy. Slowly, Teagan's fingers traced Vanilla's arm, gentle caresses that woke her from sleep. Vanilla's eyes fluttered open, blinking against the light. "Morning," she murmured, stretching slightly. Teagan smiled, leaning closer. "Morning, gorgeous," she replied, voice low, warm. "Feeling ready for a day?" Vanilla yawned, then laughed softly. "Depends. You planning something, future queen?" Teagan smirked, brushing her hair back. "Maybe a hike. Fresh air. Something to... remind us we're alive." They changed into hiking clothes, Vanilla in a fitted sweatshirt and leggings, Teagan in a loose long-sleeve shirt and cargo pants, and stepped outside. The forest greeted them with crisp air, the scent of pine and wet earth filling the senses. As they climbed, Teagan's mind drifted back to her first wolf transformation, the first time she had flown as a vampire, both moments pure terror and exhilaration. She shivered at the memory, but Vanilla noticed, placing a hand gently over hers. "You okay?" Vanilla asked, voice soft, worry threading through. Teagan smiled, leaning her head against Vanilla's shoulder. "It's okay. Not your fault... never your fault." Vanilla's heart clenched. She pressed closer, brushing hair from Teagan's face, a tender intimacy that made Teagan's pulse skip. Monday morning brought a different storm inside the walls of Eiress High. Vanilla and Rayyan were chatting at lunch, laughter light and effortless, Vanilla allowing the subtle touches Rayyan offered, careful to maintain boundaries. Teagan stood a few feet away, jaw tightening, fists clenched, jealousy simmering. She breathed deep, willing herself to calm. Finally, she approached, sliding into the seat beside Vanilla on her left. Rayyan to her right. Vanilla's hand brushed Teagan's under the table, a quiet reassurance. Rayyan smirked, leaning closer, attempting a quick kiss on Vanilla's cheek. Vanilla accepted it lightly, signaling Teagan, reminding her that there were trust and boundaries. Teagan's chest ached, but she held herself together, though the urge to mark her territory, to protect Vanilla, thrummed beneath the surface. The dinner settled in the pit of their stomachs. Teagan's family required her presence at a public dinner; she had to attend with the governor's daughter. Vanilla, visibly upset, offered instead to spend the night with Rayyan, staying within the rules they had just negotiated. Teagan's fists tightened again, but she forced herself to relax. I have to trust her. I have to... The battle between desire, jealousy, duty, and love raged inside her. Vanilla caught her eye across the table, giving her a small, reassuring smile. And for the first time that morning, Teagan let herself breathe just a little, though the storm inside her was far from over. End Chapter 9
