A week has past pretty much as normal, Dads been at work,Mom has been setting up an office space, In converted basement, Dads installed some lights to make it more habitable, his old fashioned words, not mine! I woke early but lay staring at the white ceiling in my room taking note of the way the light fitting was swaying in the breeze from the near by window, it was particularly windy for early September especially in Manhattan. I check the date, 7th September surely it’s safe now to approach the school issue? As I approached the kitchen I noticed Moms work folder on the worktop, curiosity always had the best of me and I opened it to see what she was working on, many many names of what looked to be a different language. I wonder what she’s doing? Before I can close the folder I hear her at the back door, “Ava, good morning sweetie, sleep okay?” she was chipper for 7am, “Yes I guess so! Are you working this week Mom?” I took a chance so I could pose my question. “Oh yes, lots to do this month I have a big case with a pharmaceutical company in New York, that’s why your Dad has set me up an office in the extension, it’s crucial I’m not disturbed and the things I’m working on are confidential and highly important so please behave, I’ve printed of some worksheets for you to do in your room, you’ve some catching up to do I think” her face set in stone and as stern as ever. I look back blankly, surely she hadn’t forgot? It’s not like it’s asked a question and then dropped it, I’d asked this year after year! Taking a deep breath to calm my nerves I start “ Mom, when do you think I can go to look round my new school?” I stutter over my words afraid to upset her, but to my surprise she didn’t falter “oh it’s all set sweetie, next Monday we will be going together, make sure it’s a fit and you can start!” I stare at her open mouthed, wow, she meant it she really meant it, I threw my arms around her neck she returned my embrace, somewhat stiffly,as awkward as ever at physical contact but I was so happy she did care!!! “I’ll fix you some breakfast before I start my calls,go get showered up” i lilted across the stairs to the bathroom, oh my god, a school, people, friends? Friends, I hope I’d make friends. I took a quick shower patted my tangled hair dry and ripped a brush though it, I slipped on a pale blue tracksuit and returned to the kitchen. “Pancakes” Mom declared, as if she was part of some competition, “thank you” I replied a little bewildered that for the first time in 10 years she seemed to be treating as a daughter not just a girl in her house. With that and the moment gone she gathered up her folders and returned down the long hall to the basement/office. I stared thoughtfully at the meal she had made, one of my favourites maybe she just needed time after all, I was starving so had no problem eating it and once finished I continued thinking about the new prospects of school. SHIT!!! My glass of juice fell to the counter top, I was so far away I didn’t even hear the door, scrambling to get to my feet and down the hall I ran, socks sliding in the marble floor and my hair fanning out behind me. “Hello, Sorry I was just .. I was just ..” “Hi, my names Clay, I know it’s odd but my parents sent me to introduce myself, they saw you yesterday and said I should be nice and welcoming. Don’t take it personally just I’m no babysitter!” He said, with more confidence than a Greek god. Shaking my head I try to create a sentence that won’t make me look stupid! “ Hey, it’s nice to meet you, we’ll don’t feel obligated to ‘babysit’ I’m sure I’ll be fine” I retorted, I mean it’s true he was a Greek god, tall with fair skin and dirty blonde hair swept to one side. I snap my jaw shut realising I’d been ogling. “Ava” I say smiling, “Ava good day?” He retorted, “no I’m Ava!” I said more firmly but looking at his face he knew exactly what I’d said he was just winding me up. “Well I’m heading to school now if you need a ride?” His face is sooooo sweet, “ thank you, but I don’t start until next week actually, maybe we could hang out before then?” What was I bloody thinking do people hang out anymore? Is that a thing? “Sure,I’ll call by sometime soon” and with that he walked up the drive! Wow, I think I’ll like it here..
