KATHERINE
"The babies are alive!" the voice announced shakily.
James released his grip on me. He looked dazed as he stared frostily at the nurse who just came in.
"Babies? It's not one?"
The nurse nodded.
"Are you sure?" he demanded. I heard the silent threat in his voice. It was as though he said: if I find out you're lying, I'll kill you!
The nurse nodded rapidly. "They've been put inside the incubator. They are alive!" she explained.
"You can't touch my babies!" I held onto his clothes.
I couldn't let him have my babies. I could not let them live with a monster like him. He would only train them to become stone-hearted like him and then Sandra would nurture them to maturity? Never!
He jerked my hands off and shot me a hard glare. "Don't you dare!" His voice was clipped.
Suddenly, Sandra barged in. There was something about her that seemed fishy, but I couldn't quite place it and even before she spoke, I knew she was up to no good.
She tugged at James's hand. "James, only one of the babies survived. I think it was my fault," she said and I could have sworn that she was being real.
He pulled her into his arms and placed a comforting hand on her back. I gritted my teeth in pain as I watched them. I was the one in pain here. I was the one who had just given birth. I was the one who needed consolation. What did I really do to him to deserve this hatred? All I ever asked for was his recognition and attention. I never wanted anything else.
But I couldn't cry in front of him. I couldn't let him get the satisfaction that he had hurt me. I wiped at the corners of my eyes.
Just at that moment, the throbbing pain between my legs intensified and it was so excruciating that I let out a loud cry.
"Why are you so loud? Aren't you so pathetic trying to garner pity?" His gaze bore into mine.
I suppressed the growl that was threatening to work its way out of my throat. Me? Garner his pity? I shook my head and smiled sadly. I swallowed everything that I wanted to say, suddenly realizing that it was of no use.
"Since you brought this upon yourself, I have to reject you. I only accepted you as my mate and Luna because of my father and now that you've killed him, I'll reject you as my mate."
His words sank in and settled in my chest like a heavy log of wood but I refused to be fazed as I maintained my composure.
"I, James Smith, the Alpha of the Moonlight pack, reject you, Katherine Wright, as my mate and Luna. I want you out of my face and out of my life forever!" he pronounced.
Maintaining a steady gaze, I replied, "I, Katherine Wright, accept your rejection!"
Instantly, I felt a sharp pain in my heart and it took all the self-control in my body not to fall back on the bed and clutch my chest.
James seemed taken aback for a split second. He looked like he expected me to create a fuss or beg him not to reject me.
I smiled and said calmly. "Now, I'll get lost. Just know that you'll surely regret treating me this way. I'll make you pay!"
He scoffed and then faced the doctor. "Take my child to my suite and tell one of the guards to take the traitor back to the dungeon!" he instructed before he left.
His words scared my soul but I couldn't even cry anymore. I couldn't even feel anything anymore. It was as if my heart had frozen.
I frowned in confusion when I suddenly heard a baby's cry from the other room. Soon, a nurse entered, holding a tiny baby in her arms.
I could feel a strong connection to the child and I knew it was mine. How come?
"The second baby was just revived," she said and gave it to me.
I had barely held the baby when the door opened again. My first thought was that it was James and he had come to take my baby, but when I saw Sandra's face, I was a bit relieved.
I let out my anger. "What the hell do you think you're doing? How dare you frame me for what I didn't do?”
She let out a maniacal laughter. "You think you deserve James? Hell no! Only I deserve to be Luna!"
She moved close to me, staring down at my baby intently. "I only lied about this child. I knew it was alive, but unfortunately, the other one which James took is dead now. You need to get up real quick because word has been sent across to James about the other child you're holding. He's on his way with his guards now!"
Panic surged through me as I flew up from the bed. Could I trust the words coming out of the mouth of a sly person like her? Regardless, I had to get out of here. I couldn't let them take me to any dungeons. I gathered the sheets on the bed and placed the baby gently in it. Holding it firmly against my chest, I ran out of the room.
The pain of the severance of the matebond was bearing down on my body but for the sake of the baby, I had to keep running. Soon, I was in the woods and I felt exhausted so I stopped running. I looked around me and it was all covered with tall trees with thick branches and leaves which seemed to form a blanket over the woods.
Suddenly, I heard a loud howl and four figures jumped out of the bush. I could tell that they were rogue wolves and they were staring at me with a maniacal expression on their faces.
I fell on my knees with a loud thud. "Please, don't kill me!"
One of them, who I guessed was the leader, laughed sarcastically. "We are not going to kill you, former Luna. We are only going to eat you!"
My heart went to my throat. They knew who I was? Who could have sent them? Sandra or James? It had to be one of them.
Before I knew what was happening, one of them snatched my baby from my grasp. I lunged at him but I was too weak to deliver a strong punch to his head.
My fist sliced through the air as I felt a rough hand grab me by the neck.
"How dare you, b***h?" His voice was filled with disdain.
His skin had been pierced by my fingers, and I could feel blood dripping out. He tightened the pressure around my neck and my breath caught in my chest.
I was going to die!
"M… my baby!" I whispered
The loud ripping sound of fabric filled the air and I realized they were trying to strip me. A drop of hot liquid rolled down the corner of my eyes. I struggled with them but I was feeling weak and lightheaded already.
Suddenly, the pressure on my neck was gone and the blood-curdling cries of the men filled the air as they were all rolling on the ground now.
Hazily, I glimpsed the face of the man who had taken my assailants down as his scent filled my nostrils. Who could it be? Could it be James? Or maybe…
Before I could complete the thought, a sudden blindness covered my eyes as I suddenly succumbed to total darkness.
