KATHERINE
"You said she was your best friend,” I choked. "How could you cheat on me with her?”
"You mean nothing to me. I've always told you. You are so useless! What's the use of your life if you can't even produce me an heir? The only thing that is stopping me from dumping you is my father's presence in the pack. If not for that, I would have tossed you out of my house long ago!"
His every word drove a sharp dagger through my heart and I felt a knot tighten in my stomach. His face was void of any emotion. This man was cold, I realized.
"You are really doing this because of…?" I choked on my words as his grip tightened around my neck and my breath hitched in my throat.
"Don't you get it? You can never mean something to me! You will only put this pack in danger! You are too weak to be my mate or Luna! And if you're not careful, I will reject you right now and let you die of pain from the severance of the mate bond!" he growled, his eyes glinting menacingly.
"Really?" I scoffed. "Would you really reject me even if I told you I was carrying your child?"
I watched in amusement as shock mixed with confusion flashed across his features. "You are pregnant?" His voice was laced with unbelief.
I couldn't let him know. "No!" I declared flatly. "I only want to know!"
He snickered. "It wasn't a question. I know you can never be pregnant. You're barren and useless after all!"
The weight of his words pressed against my heart. He thought so lowly of me. I turned my head just in time to catch the smug look on Sandra's face. She was enjoying this! Rage boiled in my guts. This was the height of his humiliation. How could he treat me this way in front of Sandra?
I felt the lumps of unwanted emotions gathering in my throat as the tears threatened to spill. I fought them back even as I struggled to breathe.
Finally, he released his grip on my neck and I fell to the ground, flat on my butt. The pain shot up to my brain and I struggled to suppress the shudder that threatened to escape my body.
With my eyes blazing hot, I stood up and faced James. "Since you want me out of your life so desperately, then I'll get out of your life!"
To my greatest surprise, he scoffed. "Suit yourself!"
I raced out of the room as I felt the tears stinging the corners of my eyes. The tears blurred my vision as I continued running.
How could the man who I had lived with for two years do this to me? He didn't even care if I was out of his life. I had hoped… I had prayed that he would finally see me in a different light and we could work things for good. Seems like I was wrong.
I shouldn't be crying for him! What had I gotten from being an obedient and loyal wife? Nothing but mistreatment and humiliation. If he wanted me out of his life, then I would do so. I didn't want to spend the next hour in this place!
Once in my room, I began packing the little belongings I had into my bags. I knew I shouldn't go against the former alpha, James's father, but I was past caring. I had to get out of this hellhole. Suddenly, the door hinges popped and several burly-looking men barged into my room. My heart jumped into my throat.
"What do you think you're doing?" I asked as one of them approached me.
He totally ignored me and the next moment, I was whisked off my feet. With my arms and feet flailing in the air, I struggled to wriggle out of his arms but he was just too powerful compared to me. His burly muscles pressed down my weight. I was carried all the way to the pack's meeting hall. What was happening? I couldn't help but wonder.
"Why am I here?" I demanded from the man who carried me.
He gave me a heated glance. "The Alpha summoned you!"
What does he want from me again? I thought.
He definitely said he wanted nothing to do with me, so why was he summoning me now? Could it be that he wanted me to sign the divorce papers?
The burly man had barely made it through the door when I was yanked by my clothes and slammed against the wall. I looked up to see the malicious glint in James's eyes. He looked almost feral now as his veins seemed to be popping out of his forehead. It was just like he was struggling to constrain his anger.
Something shot stars into my brain and it took some time for me to process what had just happened. My head reeled from the sting of his palms as I held my hurting cheeks.
"Why… what was that for?" I asked.
He raised his hands to give me another slap but I caught it. I wouldn't stand and let him humiliate me in front of so many people. I looked behind him to see the crowd seated quietly as they pretended as if they weren't watching.
He called the entire pack to the meeting and decided to humiliate me in front of them. Anger coursed through my veins and I watched the look of surprise on his face. I realized I was holding his hand too tight, which was a surprise to me also as I hadn't known I had such strength.
"What the hell do you think you're doing, you traitor!" his voice rang out as he yanked my hands off and held them behind my back.
"I think I could use the question too. Why am I here?” I refused to buckle.
The entire hall fell silent. In fact, it was a bit too silent as the tension in the atmosphere vibrated but I was beyond caring. I needed an explanation. Why would he call me a traitor?
"Bind the traitor with chains!" he ordered his guards and they rushed towards him.
Almost immediately, I was bound with chains even before I could protest. I watched as James marched to the front of the hall, visibly trembling with fury.
"Today, the former alpha, who is my father passed on," he began, giving me a cold glance before he continued. "However, a traitor caused his death by poisoning him! She has committed a heinous crime and she has to pay with her life!"
The hall which had been silent before jeered into life as the noisy chatter of the pack's members filled the air.
I gasped in horror. I didn't need anyone to tell me that he was referring to me. I didn't kill anyone! It was a false accusation. Why was he doing this to me?
A derisive snicker behind me drew my attention and I whipped my head around to catch the evil smirk that lifted the corners of Sandra's mouth.
The sly b***h! I thought as I bit down on a curse. This was all her handiwork. But why did she have to go this far? I was already planning to get out of their lives before, so was this really necessary? Before I could say a word, she was already striding to the front. Why was I being accused without saying my own side of the story?
"I didn't do it!" I yelled out and the noise doubled up.
I could hear their murmurs and they weren’t in my favor. They all thought I was lying. They all saw me as a traitor and a murderer. I winced as I averted my gaze from their accusatory glares.
"Who said you could speak?" James bellowed and the hall fell silent immediately. "Do you think you deserve to be given a chance to speak?" He beckoned to Sandra who was now standing at the front.
Sandra walked up to him and placed a bottle in his hands. She then turned her back to James and winked at me. She was trying to get me killed! My heart began palpitating in my chest as I racked my brain to figure out how to save my sorry ass.
James's voice rang out again. "This bottle was found in the traitor's room and it was used to poison my father! However, standing on existing pack protocols, further evidence has to be found in order to sentence her to death." He balled his hands into fists and then continued. "She is hereby stripped of her position as my wife and Luna. She will be demoted to the position of a slave till further evidence is found! Take her to the dungeons!"
All my pleas fell on deaf ears as he walked past me without so much as a glance. Suddenly, I felt something hot boiling in my blood. The heat spread across my body, threatening to snap me out of my sanity.
I felt my bones straighten up suddenly. They began to crack and my knees turned jelly. A loud yelp tore out of my throat as I fell to the ground.
What the hell was happening to me?
