Chapter 4

The menacing vampire took another step closer, his eyes locked onto mine. "You think you're too good for us, don't you? Just because you're still breathing." I clenched my fists, refusing to let their words get to me. "I don't think that at all. I'm here to serve, just like any other human in this castle." The vampires continued to taunt me, their dark words filled with cruel insinuations. Their attempts to unnerve me were working, but I couldn't let them see my fear. Lord Darian had shown me kindness and protection, but these vampires seemed to believe that any favor he extended came with a hidden cost. I took a step back, preparing to leave their company. "I have work to do. Excuse me." As I turned and walked away, their laughter echoed behind me. The castle was filled with whispers and false rumors, and the walls seemed to have ears, magnifying every word. I couldn't help but wonder what other secrets and challenges awaited me in this treacherous world of vampires. In the end, my role as the maid had become a double-edged sword, granting me a place of privilege, but also making me a target for suspicion and envy. The vampires' cruel laughter continued to haunt my steps as I moved through the castle's dimly lit corridors. Their words still echoed in my ears, a constant reminder of the treacherous nature of the supernatural world I had become entangled in. As I reached the upper levels of the castle, I couldn't shake the feeling that I was an outsider in this shadowy realm. My connection to Lord Darian had offered me protection, but it had also drawn unwanted attention from those who resided in the castle for centuries. I entered a room bathed in the eerie glow of antique chandeliers, my steps echoing on the cold marble floor. The room was empty, a rare respite from the prying eyes of the vampire hoard. I leaned against a heavy oak table, trying to regain my composure. I took a deep breath, trying to push aside the anger and frustration that had built within me. The vampires were relentless in their attempts to rile me up, to unnerve me. Their words had painted me as something I was not, and I had to find a way to assert my place in the castle. Lord Darian's kindness was a lifeline in this dark world, and I would not let it be twisted into something sinister. I had come here to serve, to make the best of my situation, and to unravel the mysteries that lay within the castle's walls. The room remained silent, save for the distant murmur of voices from the vampire hoard. I knew I would have to continue my duties and face the challenges that awaited me, both from the vampires and the secrets that surrounded me. In the shadowy corridors and candlelit chambers of the castle, my journey had only just begun. The enigmas and perils of this supernatural world were as unpredictable as they were dangerous. As I braced myself to face the dark and uncertain path ahead, I couldn't help but wonder what lay hidden beneath the surface of this ancient, foreboding place, and how my presence here would continue to shape the destiny that awaited me. The next morning came with some relief. Sunlight filled my room, and adding a light atmosphere to the otherwise dire situation I was in the middle of. I closed my eyes, following my routine of my training as I had done so many times. It seemed almost futile now though. The training methods I was accustomed to, wouldn’t work here. They’re too big. Their sharp as a pin, and they now all know of my existence. The only thing going for me at this point, was the fact that they think the Lord had picked me for some Devine reason. Yet, as I repeatedly told myself, I had to meet this mysterious Luther that only Gabriel has spoke about all too often. I cleaned myself up and headed towards the bedrooms where the hoard of blood-suckers were sleeping in their coffins. Well, it may as well be cofffins. I always assumed that’s where they would sleep, but on my first night here as a maid, I quickly learned that they slept in beds, just like us mortals. I suppose there was no alternative to comfort. “Maid!” A scream ripped through the hallway, reaching my ears in record time. I noted that the holler came from two doors down. I hurried over to find the Vampire cowering in a small corner of the room, hissing in pain. I blinked, confused, then turned my attention to the window and suppress a smirk. “What the hell happened in here?” I asked, a little too happily. “You did this!” He screamed at the top of his lungs. “You loosened the curtains so they would down whilst I slept - you tried to kill me!” I blinked, and held my composure. It would have been a good plan - one that would look like an accident. I placed the thought into a file of my mind, saving it for later. “If I wanted to kill you,” I said with a whisper, “you wouldn’t be standing here would you. I wouldn’t have come to save you, would I?” I took a step back. “So, as you accused me already - why should I put the curtain back up? For all I know, you might have used it as a ploy to get me in here alone - and suck me dry!” His lip twisted into a snarl. “There’s not enough blood in you to fill a child. No. You get those curtains up, or I’m going to tell the Lord that your cozy room should be changed to the basement, where the rest of the ‘help’ live.” I rolled my eyes and replaced the pin holding up the curtain and turned back towards him. “If there’s not enough blood in my body to fill a child, then why do you all look at me like a freaking snack?” “Are you filled up by a chocolate bar?” I shook my head. “Of course not.” “But you still eat it?” “Yeeeah,” I said, understanding his logic. “Well then. You’re our chocolate bar - and we’re just waiting for permission to rip you open.” I shuddered at the thought and left the room, listening to the sound of his cackle of laughter echo from behind me as I walked away.
