Chapter 19: Our Little Secret

532 Words
"Are you nervous?" Victor asked for the 10th time. We were in the car. On the way to the doctor. "No," I lied. My hands were sweating. Victor took my hand and kissed my knuckles. "Me too." The doctor's office was private. Werewolf only. No humans. Dr. Elise was an old wolf. She smiled when she saw us. "Congratulations," she said. "Let's see your little one." Cold gel. On my stomach. The machine beeped. And then... a sound. *Thump-thump. Thump-thump.* A heartbeat. My baby's heartbeat. I started crying. Victor grabbed my hand so hard it hurt. "Is that...?" "Yes," Dr. Elise smiled. "That's your baby. 8 weeks along. Perfectly healthy." She turned the screen. A tiny blob. With tiny arms. Tiny legs. "Our baby," Victor whispered. Dr. Elise printed a photo. "Do you want to know the gender?" Victor and I looked at each other. "Not yet," I said. "We want it to be a surprise." "Good choice," she said. "Now, take care of the mom. No stress. Lots of rest. And..." she looked at Victor, "no shifting for a while, Alpha." Victor nodded seriously. "Understood." In the car, neither of us spoke. Victor kept looking at the ultrasound photo. "Can I keep this?" he asked. I laughed. "It's yours." That night, Victor built a nursery. At 2 AM. I woke up to the sound of hammering. "What are you doing?" I asked. Victor was on the floor, surrounded by crib pieces. No shirt. Hair messy. "Building this," he said. "For our baby." "Victor, it's 2 AM." "I couldn't sleep," he said. "I kept thinking... what if it's a girl? What if it's a boy? What if they have your eyes?" I sat next to him. "Hey. Come here." He dropped the screwdriver and pulled me into his lap. "I'm scared," he admitted. "I've never been scared before. But now..." "You'll be an amazing dad," I said. "The best." "How do you know?" "Because you're already protecting them. And you haven't even met them yet." He kissed me. Soft. "We should tell the pack," he said. "Tomorrow." "Are you ready?" Victor smiled. "With you? Always." --- **Next morning. Pack Meeting.** 50 wolves again. Same room. Victor stood in front. Me beside him. "I have an announcement," he said. Whispers. "Luna and I are expecting." Silence. Then... cheering. Clapping. Howling. The elder who doubted me before came forward. He bowed. Deep. "Congratulations, Alpha. Congratulations, Luna." One by one, they all congratulated us. For the first time, I felt like I belonged. After, a young she-wolf came to me. "Luna... can I touch?" I laughed and took her hand, placing it on my stomach. "There's nothing there yet," I said. "But soon." Victor watched from across the room. Proud. Happy. When we got home, he pinned the ultrasound photo to the fridge. "First photo of our baby," he said. "Right next to the coffee." That night, he read to my stomach. Business reports. "Your dad is boring," I teased. Victor kissed my stomach. "Daddy loves you. Even if you have to hear about mergers." We fell asleep like that. Me in his arms. His hand on my stomach. Our little secret. Growing. Our future.
