Chapter 20: Baby Shower

549 Words
"Victor, I told you not to go overboard." I stood in the doorway and my mouth dropped. The entire penthouse was decorated. White and gold. Balloons. Flowers. A huge banner: `Welcome Baby Kane` Victor came up behind me and wrapped his arms around me. "I didn't," he said. "The pack did." The elevator opened. And they all poured in. Elders. Betas. She-wolves. All carrying gifts. "Luna!" The women rushed to me. Hugging me. "Congratulations!" I didn't know what to say. 3 months ago I was nothing. Today, I had a pack. Victor stayed by my side the whole time. One hand always on my back. On my stomach. "Alpha," an elder said. "To the Kane line. May the pup be strong." They all raised their glasses. "To the Luna," another said. "May she be protected." My eyes watered. Victor leaned down. "You okay?" I nodded. "I just... never thought I'd have this." "You deserve it," he whispered. The gifts were insane. Tiny suits. Tiny dresses. A crib that cost more than my old apartment. But my favorite gift was small. From the old she-wolf elder. A blanket. Handmade. "For the baby," she said. "My grandmother made one for Victor too." Victor took it and his face softened. "Thank you, Marta." After everyone left, it was just us. And a mountain of gifts. Victor picked me up and spun me. "Did you have fun?" "I did," I said. "Thank you." He set me down carefully and kissed me. "Anything for you. Anything for them." His hand went to my stomach. 10 weeks now. Still flat. "Do you think they heard all the noise?" he asked. "Probably," I laughed. "They're probably yelling at us to turn it down." We spent the night opening gifts. Building things. Victor was terrible at assembling toys. "I'm an Alpha, not an engineer," he grumbled. I kissed his cheek. "You're perfect." At midnight, Victor got serious. He pulled out a small box. "Luna," he said. "I know we have a contract. I know we rushed." My heart stopped. "But I don't want a contract anymore," he said. "I want a marriage. A real one. With you." He opened the box. A ring. Simple. Silver. With a tiny diamond. "Will you marry me? Not for the baby. Not for the pack. Just because you want to?" Tears fell before I could answer. "Yes," I whispered. "Yes, Victor. I want to." He slid the ring on my finger. Then kissed me like he was sealing a promise. "October 10th," he said. "That's the date. Before the baby comes." "That's 2 months away," I said. "Plenty of time," Victor grinned. "To plan the wedding of the century." We fell asleep on the floor, surrounded by baby gifts. Victor's arm around me. My head on his chest. For the first time in my life, I had everything. Love. Family. A home. A baby. --- **The next morning, the peace broke.** Victor's phone rang at 6 AM. He answered. His face went cold. "What do you mean he's gone?" I sat up. "Who?" Victor hung up. "Damian. He's out of the country. And he took money. A lot of it." "Where did he go?" Victor looked at me. His jaw tight. "He sent one last message." He showed me his phone.
