Chapter 22: The Trap

438 Words
The drive to the warehouse took 6 hours. No music. No talking. Just snow and the sound of Victor’s breathing. His hand never left mine. “We don’t have to do this,” I said quietly. “We can run. Far away.” Victor shook his head. “He’ll never stop chasing us. Not until one of us is dead.” He pulled up to a massive abandoned warehouse. Dark. Empty. “Stay in the car,” Victor ordered. “Locked. No matter what.” “Victor—” “Kiss me,” he cut me off. I did. Desperate. Scared. “I’ll be back,” he whispered against my lips. “I promise.” He got out. The car locked behind him. 1 minute. 2 minutes. 5 minutes. My phone buzzed. Unknown number. Video. Victor. On his knees. Blood on his face. Hands tied. Damian’s voice: “Come inside, Luna. 30 seconds. Or he dies.” My chest caved in. I unlocked the doors. The warehouse was ice cold. Echoing. “Victor?” My voice shook. “Get out!” he yelled. “It’s a trap!” Lights on. Damian. Smiling. 10 armed men behind him. And Victor. Tied to a metal chair. Beaten. “Luna,” Damian said. “So nice of you to join us.” He grabbed my wrist. Victor snapped. “LET. HER. GO.” Damian pressed a gun to Victor’s temple. “Make me.” That’s when it happened. Heat. Fire under my skin. Pain. Bones shifting. I’d been told I was wolf-less. Broken. But my wolf wasn’t dead. She was just sleeping. And she was furious. I shifted. A massive white wolf. The room went dead silent. Damian’s gun dropped. “You... you can’t...” I growled and lunged. --- Chaos. Screams. Gunshots. When it was over, Damian was gone. Ran with his tail between his legs. His men too. Victor was free. Holding me as I shifted back. He wrapped his jacket around me. His hands were shaking. “You came back,” he whispered. “Your wolf came back for me.” I nodded, crying. “For us.” Victor placed both hands on my stomach. “Hey, little one. Your mama’s a badass, huh?” And then I felt it. A tiny flutter. Like a butterfly. Kick. Our baby’s first kick. Right in the middle of everything. Victor burst out laughing and crying at the same time. “It’s over,” he said. “The war is over.” Sirens. His pack was coming. I leaned into him. “Finally safe.” “Finally ours,” Victor said.
